GAD-1 mining drivetrain with state-of-the-art battery electric drive, equipped with the batteries of new generation can be advantageous alternative to currently applied transportation machines. It can significantly improve air quality and working conditions in underground mine, where in the result of increasing number of diesel drives in suspended monorails and floor-mounted railways the workers are exposed to high concentration of exhaust gases, generated heat and noise. The GAD-1 can also generate pulling force in rack-and-pinion and friction drive system. The article describes a prototype drivetrain GAD-1, which was based on a range of new technical solutions applied for the first time in the mining industry.

Traction calculations of the car with BLDC motor with switchable number of turns with a permanent magnets electric motor with a capacity of 70kW are presented in the paper. The calculations of ability to overcome the motion resistance of the car and capable of speeds and accelartions at different ratios are shown. The necessary improvements to mount the electric drive and good points of this solution are discussed. The project of the drive is realized by Silesian University of Technology and Research and Development Centre of Electrical Machines KOMEL.

Design of steel-plant furnace three-phase transformer (110 kV/(350 to 500) V, 50 kA) and its operating conditions are described in the paper. After three months of operation this transformer failed. Cause of failure, its course and damage to transformer winding are presented. Recommendations for transformer winding design and its installation and protection are given.

Industrial AC cage rotor motors of nominal voltage 6000 and 10 000V are usually started by switching direct on line (d.o.l.). Many failures of the motors is often the result of the thermal and mechanical stresses caused by initial starting current surges in stator and rotor (squirrel cage) windings, as well as electro-dynamic vibrations occurred at starting period. In the paper thermal and dynamic effects of starting current of d.o.l. started motors are evaluated, same examples of typical disintegrated squirrel cages showed and recommendations for motor's exploitation given.

The survival of land vehicles on the battlefield can be increased either by enhancing the armour plates, using new materials and technologies, as well as indirectly by lessening the vehicle detection (reduction of electromagnetic radiation, heat emissions and noise), improving its dynamics, increasing the reliability and ergonomics, and ease of use by the crew, which is the aim of the project. The article presents the results of a development project, whose aim was to obtain increased survival of land vehicles on the battlefield. The project was implemented in the Consortium: Research and Development Center of Electric Machines "KOMEL" and Mechanical Works "BUMAR ŁABE{ogonek}DY" S.A., "WASKO" S.A. and the Silesian University of Technology.

This article presents a project and calculations of electromagnetic circuit in axial flux permanent magnet motor with two outer stators and inner rotor. It is an axial flux motor which is characterized by efficient use of the machine volume, and thus a high ratio of the power density. The analytical circuit calculations have been overwritten and the results of three-dimensional magnetostatic field calculations as well as the results for motor work have been presented. Furthermore, the influence of the electromagnetic circuit geometry on the selected motor parameters has been studied, e.g. influence of the shape of permanent magnets on the cogging torque has been investigated.

The specific geometry of disc motors electromagnetic circuit causes that the interest in this type of structures in recent years is increasing. This article presents exemplary methods of electromagnetic circuits calculations of axial flux permanent magnet motors, whose correctness has been verified based on the laboratory tests results. On the basis of the outcomes analysis the evaluation of elaborated algorithm of analytical calculations and the accuracy of three-dimensional motor model was made. The summary contains the conclusions and comments on the topic.

High capacity induction squirrel cage motors used at different industrial drives are usually started by direct line starts. Starting current, several times higher than nominal load current, causes thermal and mechanical dynamic stresses posing hazard to motor construction. Both stator and rotor windings are endangered at starting period, but stresses in rotor cages are usually considerably higher, therefore rotor design (and its manufacturing process) is of high importance for motor's durability.

High voltage (6000 and 10000 V) AC squirrel cage motors are started by switching direct on line. The inrush of starting current causes mechanical and thermal stresses in the motor structure, mainly in their rotor's cage. Motors for hard working conditions, esp. for high frequency of starts, or for long lasting starts should be designed and manufactured especially. At Komel Centre several calculation and designing methods for motors exploited at hard working and starting conditions were elaborated. The motors were exploited several years in various branches of industry without any breakdowns. In the paper three cause studies are presented: 550, 800, and 2000 kW motors, where redesigning and replacing only their rotors were full satisfactory.

Electrical motors are increasingly being used as a drive motor vehicles and aircraft such as gliders, powered gliders and unmanned aircraft. Looking for a solution of the electrical machine characterized as the biggest moment of the unit weight were taken into account disc motors with permanent magnets. The article present selected construction of axial flux motors which could be used as drive motor vehicles or aircraft.
