Geographic information systems (GIS) software packages have been developed that connect attribute information such as quantities of biomass produced, wastes generated in a database to geographic features such as locations of processing facilities, roads, population densities on a digital map. A GIS can be viewed in three ways such as database view that describes the world in geographic terms, map view that shows feature relationships on the earth's surface and model view that involves information processing tools deriving new geographic datasets from existing datasets. GIS is used to plan out organics/bioenergy infrastructure such as Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) has developed a GIS-based anaerobic digester mapping tool to assist the IDNR and its partners with the identification of sites in the state with large quantities of feedstock for codigestion. Composters are using GIS to find suitable sites for organics facilities such as McGill Environmental Systems uses ArcView GIS mapping for regional facility development suitability studies.

Several commercial project developers are focusing on the agricultural and regional mixed organic waste substrate sectors with the advancement in the anaerobic digestion industry. AgPower partnered with Dean Foods, the largest processor and producer of dairy products in the US, on the company's first digester project at the Big Sky Dairy near Gooding, Idaho. The Big Sky project processes manure from the dairy's 4,700 cows to generate up to 1.2 MW of electricity that is sold to Idaho Power. Digestate is separated, with the liquid returned to the dairy's lagoons for land application and solids are shared with the dairy, which uses them for bedding. The New Energy Company is building digesters at Bettencourt Dairies' Rock Creek Dairy near Filer. The $13.1 million New Energy One project will feed manure from 8,900 cows on three dairies into a central system composed of six, 1.026-million gallon UTS digesters.

Huckabay Ridge, closed in 2010, was purchased at a public auction by Element Markets (EM), a privately held producer marketer of renewable natural gas and environmental commodities, and operations restarted in 2011. EM is investing approximately $12 million in plant improvements and upgrades with the aim to turn Huckabay into a technological and commercial success. To insure feedstock quality EM built an onsite laboratory staffed with a full time technician. Currently Huckabay is feeding 120,000 to 150,000 gallons of manure and 30,000 gallons of substrate (50 percent glycerin and 50 percent FOG) to the digesters daily to produce about 2,000-scfm of biogas. EM will also leverage its expertise in the trading and marketing of environmental commodities to participate in the California credit market via its sale of RNG to PG&E.

A recent study launched by Pecos Valley Biomass Cooperative, Inc. (PVBC) has evaluated the feasibility of anaerobically digesting manure from dry lot dairies operating in New Mexico. Based on the results, an economic evaluation is underway to find the feasibility of implementing a centralized anaerobic digestion system to generate electricity and value-added products from dairy manure. During the project. Waste samples were collected over different time periods and from different dairies between August 2009 and March 2011. The average total solids content of manure collected from free stall dairies is about 12 percent. The ash content of the daily scrape averaged 22.7 percent compared to as excreted manure that averages 15 percent. The weekly scrape exhibited a higher higher heating value (HHV) than the daily scrape.

Similarly, if the feedstocks in a composting pile are not proportioned and mixed properly, not only will it not compost well, there is a significant risk of process problems ranging from malodors to lack of pathogen inactivation.
