The thermal degradation of polyacrylic carboxylic and polystyrene sulfonic cationites was investigated using thermal analysis (TG) combined with Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) was used to characterize the resins degradation steps. The carboxylic cationite undergoes degradation through dehydration forming polyanhydrides, decomposition of polyanhydrides through decarboxylation with elimination of CO2 and CO. The sulfonic cationite undergoes degradation through dehydration, followed by decomposition of sulfonic acid functional groups liberating SO2. It was observed that strong acid (-SO3H+) cationite shows small mass loss of 55%, as against 88% mass loss shown by low-acidity carboxylic cationite. The possible reason for small mass loss of sulfonic cationite is discussed. The text was submitted by the authors in English. © 2010 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

The content of elements in 12 Indian medicinal plants was analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) and atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) techniques. Specific parts of different medicinal plants like bulb, tuber, flower, gum, and rhizomes, which are often used in Indian Ayurvedic system, were used for the study. The thermodynamic measurements was carried out to study the selectivity of cation exchange resin Amberlite IR-120 in protonated form with respect to Mg2+, Ca2+, Sr2+ and Ba2+ ions in solution. The equilibrium constant K was calculated using the activity coefficients of ions in solution as well as in the resin. The K values calculated for the reacting systems increase with temperature that suggests the endothermic exchange reactions with estimated enthalpy values of 38.8, 20.6, 8.45, and 7.24 kJ mol-1, respectively. On the basis of calculated parameters, the selectivity of ion exchange resin with respect to various bivalent ions in the solution was predicted. The method used in our experimental work provides a basis for characterization of ion exchange resins, which can be promising materials for efficient separation of ions from industrial waste effluents. © Pleiades Publishing, Ltd., 2010.

The ion exchange resins Duolite A-161 and Duolite A-162 in bromide form were equilibrated separately with the labeled radioactive bromide ion solution of different concentrations varied from 0.005 to 0.100 M in the temperature range 25.0-45.0°C. The K d values of bromide ions for Duolite A-162 were found to be higher than that for Duolite A-161 under similar experimental conditions. The difference in K d values of bromide ions for these two resins is produced by a swelling pressure depending on the water holding capacities. © 2010 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Hexahedral nanocrystals of L-Alanine [CH3CH(NH2)COOH] doped LaF3:Ce (ALFC) of assorted sizes have been synthesized in deionized water using water soluble chlorides of lanthanides with subsequent microwave irradiation to reduce agglomeration. The average particle sizes obtained by XRD, SEM, and TEM have been 22nm, 32.2 ± 6.65nm and 22.28 ± 4.51nm respectively. The surface modification by functional groups of L-Alanine has been observed in the FTIR and FTRAMAN spectra. The electron-phonon interaction of A1g phonon mode and fundamental Eg phonon mode have been observed in far infra-red region by FT-RAMAN spectra. The UV-Vis spectrum shows multiple absorption edges corresponding to energies at E1 = 5.11eV, E2 = 4.47eV, and E3=5.781eV which indicates the quantum dot nature of the nanocrystals and its application in optoelectronic devices. ALFC nanocrystals shows green color emission peak centered at 554 nm and may be useful in biological labelling. The thermal profile have been studied by TGA/DTA spectrum.
