In the anodising of aluminium (ELOXAL) using DC and sulphuric acid electrolytes, there is a continuing problem of airborne sulphuric acid concentrations in excess of the specified work-place concentration (AGW) of 0.1 mg/m3. Measurements made by member companies of the Trade Association, Berufsgenossenschaft Energie Textil Elektro Medienerzeugnisse (BG ETEM) demonstrated that 43% of all samples taken, exceeded the AGW concentration level. This only served to underline the importance of work to minimise the concentration of such sulphuric acid aerosols. A "shielding" of the cathode can lead to a significant reduction in the workplace concentration of sulphuric acid aerosols. The BG ETEM therefore carried out, in selected companies, extensive studies aimed at enabling those companies suffering from this problem to comply with legislation.
