We have studied gamma-induced defects in BaFI crystals. To gain insight into the origin of the observed induced absorption bands, we analyzed the dose dependence of the concentration of color centers. The results lead us to assign the 205-nm absorption band to α(F -) centers, the 270-nm band to F i 0 centers, the 370-nm band to I 0 i centers, the bands around 480 nm to F(F -) centers, and the 610-nm band to F(I -) centers. © Pleiades Publishing, Ltd., 2011. We have studied processes induced in gamma-irradiated BaFI crystals by illumination and thermal annealing and identified defect centers responsible for the observed absorption bands. We assign the 205-nm absorption band to α(F -) centers, the 230-nm band to α(I -) centers, the 270-nm band to F i 0 centers, the 370-nm band to I i 0 centers, the bands around 480 nm to F(F -) centers, and the 610-nm band to F(I -) centers. We have studied radiation-induced defect formation processes in gamma-irradiated BaFI crystals doped with Eu, W, and Tl and compared them with those in unirradiated BaFI. The results demonstrate that the radiation-induced defect formation processes in the Eu- and W-doped crystals differ insignificantly from those in the undoped samples. In the Tl-doped crystals, the radiation-induced formation of native and extrinsic defects undergoes drastic changes because of the competition between native anion vacancies and Tl 2+ dopant ions for electron capture. © 2014 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
