Investigations were carried out into the behaviour in a corrosive medium of joints in galvanized steels produced by arc welding and brazing without removal of the coating using welding materials based on iron, copper, zinc and aluminium. The topography of the electrode potentials and galvanic currents on the surface of the joints, coated with a thin layer of the electrolyte, is determined. The maximum width of the damaged coating in relation to the joint, ensuring efficient anodic shielding, is determined. We have studied the resolution of a waveguide spectrum analyzer, based on a prism coupler for mode excitation, as a function of the structural parameters of the waveguide. We show that the limiting resolution of the waveguide spectrum analyzer is determined by the ratio of the chromatic dispersion of the waveguide to the imaginary part of the propagation constant for the leaky mode of the waveguide/coupling prism structure. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media New York. The waveguide technique for measuring the absorption spectra of thin films in spectral range of their transparency is considered. The error of measuring the absorption of a ∼0.1 μm thick film does not exceed 5% at an absorption coefficient of less than 50 cm–1.
