A two-dimensional numerical model is used to study the generation of powerful microwave radiation in a vircator with an inhomogeneous magnetic field applied to focus a beam. The characteristics of the external inhomogeneous magnetic field are found to strongly affect the vircator generation characteristics. Mathematical optimization is used to search for the optimum parameters of the magnetic periodic focusing system of the oscillator in order to achieve the maximum power of the output microwave radiation. The dependences of the output vircator power on the characteristics of the external inhomogeneous magnetic field are studied near the optimum control parameters. The physical processes that occur in optimized virtual cathode oscillators are investigated. © 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Single crystals of the ternary compound FeIn 2Se 4 have been grown by directional solidification in a vertical Bridgman geometry, and their composition, structure, and melting point have been determined. The relative length change of FeIn 2Se 4 has been measured on a dilatometer using oriented single-crystal sam- ples, and its thermal expansion coefficients have been determined. The thermal expansion of FeIn 2Se 4 is shown to be markedly anisotropic. © Pleiades Publishing, Ltd., 2010.

Crystals of (FeIn 2S 4) 1 - x (In 2S 3) x solid solutions consisting of large blocks have been grown by directional solidification (horizontal Bridgman process). FeIn 2S 4, In 2S 3, and the solid solutions are shown to crystallize in the spinel structure. The composition dependence of their unit-cell parameter a follows Vegard's law. The local states of the Fe ions in the solid solutions have been studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy in a transmission geometry. © 2011 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

A technology of growing single crystals of (In2S3)x(MnIn2S4)1 - x solid solutions that provides control over their atomic composition in the entire concentration range 0 ≤ x ≤ 1 is developed. It is shown that, in the range x = 0-1, the single crystals have the cubic spinel structure and the unit cell parameter a follows the linear dependence on x. The exponential character of the temperature dependence of resistivity of solid solutions, on which the first photosensitive Cu/(In2S3)x(MnIn2S4)1 - x structures are obtained, is revealed. The first photosensitivity spectra of these structures are obtained, and, based on these spectra, dependences of energy of the direct and indirect band-to-band transitions on the composition x are determined. The possibility of applying these structures in broad-band photoconverters of optical radiation is concluded. © Pleiades Publishing, Ltd., 2010.

Complete mutual solubility in the (In2S3)x(FeIn2S4)1 - x system is established. The technology is developed, and single crystals of the continuous series of the (In2S3)x(FeIn2S4)1 - x solid solutions are grown for the first time. The linear dependence of the unit cell parameter of single crystals with a cubic spinel lattice on the solid solution composition is found. First, photosensitive Schottky barriers are fabricated, and then, based on studies of their photosensitivity, the character of band-to-band transition is discussed and the values of the band gap depending on the atomic composition are estimated. The possibility of using the obtained solid solutions as broadband photoconverters of optical radiation is revealed. © Pleiades Publishing, Ltd., 2010.

A technique for the solution of the problem of penetration of symmetric E and H modes of a circular waveguide through an azimuthally symmetric bi-isotropic diaphragm is developed. The problem of the transformation of symmetric waves on a plane bi-isotropic diaphragm is numerically solved. Conditions providing for the effective transformation of the H (E) wave into the E (H) wave are found. © 2013 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
