A rigorous method of integral equations has been used to calculate the dispersion characteristics, fields, and radiation patterns of the leaky modes of photonic-crystal fibers with a shell in the form of a bounded 2D photonic crystal composed of parallel quartz capillaries contacting each other and a core in the form of a defect of a photonic crystal with one capillary removed. It is shown that, when thick-walled capillaries (with an air content in the shell of about 28%) are used, these fibers can be single mode and have an overlap integral of the fundamental-mode field with the dielectric medium that is smaller by a factor of more than two (in comparison with similar fibers formed by air channels of circular cross section). The significant dispersion of the group velocity of the fundamental modes of fibers near the edge of the photonic crystal band gap has been found. © 2010 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

The propagation constants and the field distribution of the higher-order modes in photonic-crystal fibers have been studied. It is shown that the standard single-mode operation condition of a fiber, in which the first higher-order mode is cut-off, is not applicable to photonic-crystal fibers because the latter can guide higher-order eigenmodes, even when this condition is fulfilled. © Pleiades Publishing, Ltd., 2011.

A criterion for selecting the best ranges for measuring the reflectivity of a prism coupler, based on minimizing the error in reconstructing the parameters of thin films using the least-square method, is proposed. The design of permanent joints with fillet welds characterized by bevelling of the edges with the depth decreasing with an increase in the distance from the weld edge to the centre of the weld is proposed. The experimental results show that in producing permanent joints with the edge bevel of variable depth, the volume of the deposited metal is reduced by 35% with the corresponding reduction in the material requirement of the process without reducing the load-carrying capacity of the welded joint. © 2013 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

The character of changes in the light-reflection coefficient in the zone of indicator patterns of flaws on a magnetic-field-visualizing film was determined during magnetic testing of ferromagnetic plates. The flaw detection in specimens was performed in an applied field directed in parallel to the inspected surface. External light radiation was directed perpendicular to the specimen surface and the magnetic-field-visualizing film that were placed on it. © 2014 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

A method for the experimental determination of the size of an internal flaw in a ferromagnetic object while taking the depth of the flaw into account was developed. A film for visualizing magnetic fields was used to record fields of flaws. The information parameters of a flaw-induced signal were determined when testing a ferromagnetic plate in an applied field. Nomograms that allow determination of the depth and size of a flaw were constructed. © 2014 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.
