Electrical heating cable comprising two or more strands of metal filaments twisted or cabled together. At least one of the strands comprises a first set of metal filaments and a second set of metal filaments, both for conducting electrical current and generating heat when the heating cable is in use. The metal filaments of the first set of metal filaments comprise a steel layer. The metal filaments of the second set comprise a steel layer. The metal filaments of the second set have an annealed microstructure.


Saw cords used for sawing natural or manmade stony materials are made of saw beads threaded on a steel cord (52,522,522), wherein the saw beads are separated by polymer spacers. The saw beads comprise a metal sleeve (204, 304) of which the outer surface is covered with an abrasive layer. The inventors observed that saw cords returning from the field frequently failed due to saw beads that begin to rotate during use thereby eroding away the polymer between the steel cord and the inner of the saw bead. Eventually, the polymer is worn away and the outer steel filaments of the steel cord are ground away due to the interaction with saw dust and water. The inventors provide the inner surface of the sleeve with two sets (214) of parallel grooves in a first (206, 306) and second (208,308) axial part of the sleeve. The two sets of parallel grooves differ in at least one of the groove angle (,), the groove offset () or the groove spacing (1l, D2), thereby preventing axial movement of the sleeve and blocking the rotation of the saw bead.

A welding apparatus is presented that allows for a controlled welding of steel cord ends. The welding apparatus allows for a controlled welding path from welding period over post-weld period to complete cool-down. In the welding apparatus a direct current source is controlled over time by means of a programmable controller. By sensing the voltage over the clamps of the welding apparatus and using this as a further input to the programmable controller, a constant power dissipation between the clamps can be achieved in the post-weld period. An associated method for making the weld is described wherein during the post-welding period the electric power dissipated between the clamps is held constant. The welds obtained by this procedure have a favourable metallographic structure in that the heat affected zone has more than 50% of pearlite and/or bainite over the total area of that zone.

An arrangement (100) of elongated material (101) wound in a plurality of layers on a spool (102) is provided. The spool (102) comprising a cylindrical core (104), a bottom flange (106) and a top flange(108). A first series of layer form a conical basis (214) of elongated material (101) on the core (104) so that elongated material (101) is present at the bottom flange (106) in a larger amount than at the top flange(108). A second series of layers (216, 218, 220, 222) is wound over the conical basis (214) and extends from bottom flange (106) to top flange (108) thereby keeping a conical form of the wound elongated material (101). The conical basis (214) is formed by: - a first layer (202) being wound on the cylindrical core (104) between the bottom flange (106) and the top flange (108) in a first number of windings, - a second layer (204) being wound on the first layer (202) in a second number of windings, said second number of windings being equal to or smaller than the first number of windings, said second layer (204) reaching the bottom flange (106) but not necessarily the top flange(108), - additional layers (206, 208, 210,212) being wound on the second layer (204) in numbers of windings where these numbers of windings decrease on average as the conical basis (214) is being formed, the additional layers (206, 208, 210, 212) reach the bottom flange (106). This arrangement has the advantage of reducing unwinding problems.

The capstan (202) cooling system is based on deflectable flaps (204) that are pressable against the inner surface of the capstan. The cooling system has the advantage that the flaps (204) skid on the coolant film at the operational speed and scrape the inner surface of the capstan (202) at start or stop speeds. In this way the inner surface of the capstan is cleaned from rust and other debris. At the operational speed, as the flaps skid on the coolant, there is very little loss in power due to friction.

A steel cord (132) adapted to reinforce a breaker or belt ply in a rubber tire comprises a core group and a sheath group. The core group consists of two to four core steel filaments (102) with a first diameter dcand the sheath group consists of one to six sheath steel filaments (116) with a second diameter ds. The ratio dc/ds of the first diameter dcto the second diameter dsranges from 1.10 to 1.70. The two core steel filaments (102) are untwisted or have a twisting step greater than 300 mm. The sheath group is twisted around the core group with a cord twisting step in a cord twisting direction. The ratio of the difference in residual torsions of the core group and the sheath group to the difference in saturation level between the core group and the sheath group ranges from 0.10 to 0.65, preferably from 0.10 to 0.60. The steel cord (132) has no flare and plastic deformation of the steel filaments (102, 116) can be reduced while still obtaining a steel cord (132) without flare. A twisting equipment (100) comprising a buncher (106) and a method of manufacturing said steel cord (132) is disclosed, too.

A porous panel with a surface area of at least 0.5 m2, e.g. for use in the production of filters for molten polymer processing,comprises a first layer of metal fibers of an average equivalent diameter between 8 and 65 m. The cross-section of the metal fibers has two neighboring straight sides with an included angle of less than 90 and one or more irregularly shaped curved sides. The metal fibers have an average length of at least 6 mm. The metal fibers are bonded to each other by means of metal bonds; wherein the metal of the metal fibers of the first layer is the bonding agent forming the metal bonds. The filter comprises a second layer of metal fibers. The average equivalent diameter of the metal fibers of the second layer is smaller than the average equivalent diameter of the metal fibers of the first layer. The first layer and the second layer are bonded to each other by metal bonds, wherein the metal of the metal fibers of the first layer and of the second layer is the bonding agent forming the metal bonds. The porous panel can be advantageously used in the production of filters for molten polymer processing, as the porous panel simplifies the production process of such filters and provides a filter with excellent gel shearing properties and excellent filtration performance.
