An arrangement of elongated material wound in a plurality of layers on a spool having a cylindrical core, a bottom flange and a top flange. A first series of layer form a conical basis of elongated material on the core where elongated material is present at the bottom flange in a larger amount than at the top flange. A second series of layers is wound over the conical basis. The conical basis is formed by a first layer being wound on the cylindrical core between the bottom flange and the top flange in a first number of windings, a second layer being wound on the first layer in a second number of windings being equal to or smaller than the first number of windings, the second layer reaching the bottom flange, where additional layers are wound on the second layer in numbers of windings.

A welding apparatus for a controlled welding of steel cord ends. The welding apparatus allows for a controlled welding path from welding period over post-weld period to complete cool-down. In the welding apparatus a direct current source is controlled over time using a programmable controller. By sensing the voltage over the clamps of the welding apparatus and using this as a further input to the programmable controller, a constant power dissipation between the clamps can be achieved in the post-weld period. An associated method for making the weld where during the post-welding period the electric power dissipated between the clamps is held constant. The welds obtained by this procedure have a favourable metallographic structure in that the heat affected zone has more than 50% of pearlite and/or bainite over the total area of that zone.

A steel cord for reinforcing a breaker or belt ply in a rubber tire having a core group and a sheath group. The core group consists of two to four core steel filaments with a first diameter dc and the sheath group consists of one to six sheath steel filaments with a second diameter ds. The ratio dc/ds of the first diameter dc to the second diameter ds ranges from 1.10 to 1.70. The two core steel filaments are untwisted or have a twisting step greater than 300 mm. The sheath group is twisted around the core group with a cord twisting step in a cord twisting direction. The ratio of the difference in residual torsions of the core group and the sheath group to the difference in saturation level between the core group and the sheath group ranges from 0.10 to 0.65, preferably from 0.10 to 0.60.

A cable bolt for providing support and balance to a rock mass, comprising: a multi-strand cable having a plurality of steel wires being twisted together, said multi-strand cable having a first end portion for anchoring in a borehole of rock mass and a second end portion for being positioned adjacent to the opening of the borehole, a fixture secured to the second end portion of said multi-strand cable, wherein at least one of the plurality of steel wires is made from steel having as steel composition: a carbon content ranging from 0.20 weight percent to 0.95 weight percent, a silicon content ranging from 0.5 weight percent to 2.0 weight percent, a manganese content ranging from 0.40 weight percent to 1.0 weight percent, a chromium content ranging from 0.0 weight per cent to 1.0 weight percent, a sulphur and phosphor content being limited to 0.025 weight percent, the remainder being iron, and said steel has as metallurgical structure: a volume percentage of retained austenite ranging from 4 percent to 25 percent, the remainder being tempered primary martensite and untempered secondary martensite.

The web layers are formed by two or more metal fiber or metal wire having webs wound around the central axis. When observed from the central axis to the outside of the regenerator, at least one web layer of a web of a first width is followed by a web layer of a web of a width larger than the web of a first width.

An arrangement of an elongated element wound on a spool is presented. The elongated element-has a leading end having a bent part and an unbent part. The bent part further having a beginning part and a trailing end. The leading end is positioned on the core of the spool and the bent part deviates at least for a part from a winding direction. The elongated element further forms subsequent windings in the winding direction on the core. At least one of the subsequent windings is wound over the beginning part of the bent part while an adhesive is provided to fix the trailing end of the bent part on the core simultaneously thereby securing elongated element on the spool.

A spool fixation device for use in a wire winding installation, where in this spool fixation device, spools having a magnetically attractable flange are held to a rotatable flange using magnet assemblies. The magnet assemblies can be switched between a hold state and a release state. In a preferred embodiment the magnet assemblies only consume energy when in the release state i.e. when the spool fixation device is not rotating. Alternatively the magnet assemblies can be made to only consume energy when switching states. The magnet assemblies have permanent magnet arrays and are moveable inside a non-magnetic housing. Also a drive pin to transfer torque between rotatable flange and spool is no longer necessary. Therefore the spool fixation devices allows for a smooth changeover of spools.

A method to make sawing beads by means of laser cladding is disclosed whereby metal matrix powder is molten by means of a laser beam on a rotating sleeve while diamonds are thrown in the molten metal pool. By carefully controlling the temperature of the molten metal pool at or above 1150 C. for less than 200 ms the internal graphitisation of the diamonds can be limited. Although some of the diamonds in the sawing bead show internal graphitisation it is demonstrated by the inventors that a sawing cord using the bead obtained by the method has an above standard sawing performance.
