The characteristics and applications of cesium formate brine as drilling and completion fluids were presented and following topics were covered: compatibility with elastomers, corrosion, lubrication, thermal stability, reservoir protection, environmental safety, recycling, etc. Up to October 2009, cesium formate brine had been applied in HTHP wells for 220 times, and the application in the field showed that the use of cesium formate brine could reduce downhole accident, shorten the well construction period, and increase oil production and recovery. Formate drilling fluid system is widely used all over the world, while potassium formate and sodium formate drilling fluid system are currently used in China. However, there is little information on a rare metal brine of cesium formate system, with emphasis on its field application and its compatibility with treatment agents. To research and develop such a cesium formate drilling fluid system, a series of experiments was carried out to test the compatibility of cesium formate brine with treatment agents. Xanthan gum, Antisol FL-10, Dristemp, and ExStar HT had good compatibilities with cesium formate brine. All could be used in the cesium formate drilling fluid system, except for Driscal-D, which had bad compatibility because of being crosslinked into sheets in the cesium formate brine. The results provide proof for the proper selection of suitable treatment agents in a cesium formate drilling fluid system. Source
