By the improved individual can combustor, the differences of the combustion and emission characteristics between coal-based jet fuel and petroleum-based RP-3 jet fuel were evaluated. The results showed that the coal-based jet fuel had better lean ignition and lean blowout performances; in addition, the combustion and emission characteristics of these two jet fuels exhibited the same trends when the fuel flow or exit temperature changed. However, the combustion and emission characteristics of the coal-based jet fuel were slightly lower than those of the RP-3 at the same fuel flow, furthermore, at the same exit temperature, the wall temperature of the coal-based jet fuel was lower than that of the RP-3. © 2016, Editorial Department of Journal of Aerospace Power. In order to study the atomization performance of coal liquefied oil in the aero-engine, the pressure-swirl atomizer was employed to test the mass flow rate, spray cone angle and radial fuel distribution at different fuel injection pressure and the results were compared with results from RP-3 jet fuel. The experimental results show that the mass flow rate of coal liquefied oil is 4.24% higher than that of RP-3 jet fuel as the fuel injection pressure within 1.8MPa. When the fuel injection pressure is more than 1. 8MPa, the mass flow rates of two fuels are close to each other. The spray cone angle of coal liquefied oil increases with increasing the fuel injection pressure up to around 0.8MPa and above it keeps the value about 99°. The spray cone angle of coal liquefied oil is 4° lower than that of RP-3 jet fuel under the same fuel injection pressure. The radial fuel distribution of coal liquefied oil and RP-3 jet fuel are similar, and the heterogeneous degree of distribution is within 10%. © 2016, Editorial Department of Journal of Propulsion Technology. A kind of coal-based jet fuel was made out of coal direct liquefied oil.Based on GC-MS analysis,its hydrocarbon group-type consists of 32% monocyclo-alkane,42.3% bicyclo-alkane,13.6% tricycle-alkane,9.9% alkane and some aromatics on a per mass basis.Then,its physicochemical properties were also tested and proved to meet the GB 6537-2006 specification.Compared to China No.3 jet fuel,it provides high density,lower mass calorific value,and 3.5% prominent higher volume calorific value.Thereafter its density and viscosity changes along with temperature were studied,which provide the results of temperature correction coefficient for density,and formula to calculate viscosity. © 2016, Editorial Office of Journal of China Coal Society. The atomization of coal liquefied oil in a pressure-swirl atomizer was investigated in this research. The results show that the droplet size of the coal liquefied oil decreases with increasing fuel injection pressure up to around 1.3 MPa, above which further increases in fuel injection pressure produce little effect on the droplet size. A high concentration of smaller droplets appears in the middle surrounded by a cloud of larger droplets on the periphery. The Sauter mean diameter of the coal liquefied oil is bigger than that of the petroleum based jet fuel (RP3) at the same fuel injection pressure. ©, 2014, Press of Tsinghua University. The composition and property of coal liquefied jet fuel distillate made in our country were studied in this paper. The test results showed that some of the physical and chemical properties were not fit for No.3 jet fuel specification and it could not be used as jet fuel. On the other hand, it is excellent in some performance such as high-density, high-flash point and low freezing point. The results showed that naphthenic hydrocarbons and tetralin homologs as well as alkyl benzene homologs were enriched in the distillate. This distillate could be used in the process of development high-powered jet fuel.
