Traditional transmission lines, which prevent the insulator from flashover lightning overvoltage caused by injury, need insulator and lightning arrester parallel connection. But increased line load, increase circuit complexity and maintenance difficulty. In this study, a surge arrester with the performance of insulator was developed, and its characteristics were analyzed through calculation of electric field, analysis of mechanical forces, and electric test. Trial operation in Bao-Shou power transmission line verifies that this surge arrester can simplify the line's facilities, facilitate the maintenance, and ensure safe and stable operation of the power grid. ©, 2014, Xi'an High Voltage Apparatus Research Institute. The insulator of a high-voltage transmission line supports the wire and prevents the current from flowing back to the ground. However, flashover may occur on it when transmission line is subject to lightning or operation overvoltage, and it may even be burned or crushed. To ensure safe work of the insulator, the insulator is usually paralleled with an arrester, whereas this parallel layout will increase the load of line and tower due to the large volume and weight of the arrester, and will make transmission facility complicated. In addition, additional equipment on tower arm will result in inconveniency in installation of the arrester. In this paper, an lighting-protective insulator is designed, its electric field is optimized, and simulation is performed to verify its mechanical properties. The results show that this integrated device can meet the requirements for both insulator and arrester. As a new channelizing type protective manner, the parallel protective gap can provide effective protection for insulator string to achieve more reliable reclosing. The current researches on the parallel protective gap in China are focused on moving characteristic of arc and shape of the gap, but few researches are concerned with the characteristics of the gap and the relationship between arc on the gap and insulator. The authors conducted a number of tests to investigate protective property of the gap to insulator, and suggested that the distance between two electrodes of the gap be large than 90% of insulator string's structural height, and the distance between the gap and insulator string be sufficient for achieving effective anti-lightning protection of insulator string.
