The effect of gamma radiation from 60Co on properties of halogen free flame retardant ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM) and its blends with phenyl vinyl methyl silicon rubber (PVMQ) was studied. The dose rates were 171.7 Gy/min and 283 Gy/min and the total dose was up to 500 kGy. Mechanical properties, electrical insulation, limiting oxygen index (LOI), crosslink density of the rubber were carried out to characterize the properties via irradiation. The results show that the elongation at break, the tensile strength and the electrical insulation decrease with LOI unaffected with the increase of radiation dose. The dose rates have no effect on the mechanical properties.

AlMgB14 super-hard materials can be applied in some fields such as wear-resistant, self-lubricating and protective coatings for cutting tools and protective coatings for micro devices and micro electromechanical components, due to their extremely high hardness, low density, high thermal stability and desirable thermoelectric properties. In the present paper, we introduced some methods for preparing AlMgB14 super-hard materials. Detailed techniques about AlMgB14 disks synthesis at ambient pressure through a two-step heat treatment were introduced. In the first step, MgB2 disks doped with Al and Ti were fabricated through composition of uniformly mixed Mg, B, Al powders and Ti powder of different contents in the form of pressed disks heated at 850℃ for 2 h in closed argon atmosphere. And in the second step, target AlMgB14-TiB2 disks were obtained after sintering the MgB2 disks at 1050℃ for 0.5 h in vacuum. The microstructure images show that the grain size of AlMgB14 is fine and the nano-scale TiB2 particles as the second phase induced by Ti doping are uniformly distributed at the grain boundaries. The research status on bulk and film of AlMgB14 and the future researching scope of AlMgB14 were also presented. © 2016, Science Press. All right reserved.

MgB2 bulks were prepared by high-energy ball milling of Mg, B and Ti powders at ambient temperatures. The mixed powders were ball-milled for 0-10 h using a ball-to-powder mass ratio of 10 and sintered at 750 °C for 2 h. The phase and microstructure of MgB2 were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning electron microscope (SEM). XRD results reveal the appearance of a small amount of MgO impurity, and the relative percentage composition of MgO phase is gradually increased with prolonged the milling time. It proved that the sample milled 5 h has the best homogeneity in grain size. The milled 5 h powders were further processed to wires. The wire samples were fabricated by the in-situ powder-in-tube (PIT) method. The mechanical properties were analyzed by stress-strain measurements at room temperature and the superconducting behaviors are investigated by electrical tests at 4.2 K. The critical engineering current Ic reaches above 330 A (Jce exceeding 2.2×104 A/cm2) at 4.2 K and 2 T. © 2015 The Authors.

High Jc Ti-doped MgB2 disks were synthesized by two-step reaction method and high-energy ball milling. In the first step, the sample with a nominal composition of Mg0.8Ti0.2B4 was sintered at 900 °C for 2 h. In the second step, an appropriate amount of Mg was then added to get the stoichiometry of Mg0.9Ti0.1B2, which was milled for 5 h and sintered at 750 °C for 2 h. The phase, microstructure and superconductivity of MgB2 were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM) and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). The critical current density reaches 6.9 × 104 A cm-2 at 20 K and 1 T. The investigation showed the efficient combination between two-step reaction method and high-energy ball milling is effective to obtain high density and fine grain size bulk MgB2 with high Jc performance. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.
