The Al-5Ti-0.5B-0.5C grain refiner was prepared by powder metallurgy (PM). Microstructures of the grain refiner and its grain refinement performance in commercially pure aluminum (Al) were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). It is found that the average grain size of commercially pure Al can be reduced from ~15,000 to ~180 μm by the addition of Al-5Ti-0.5B-0.5C grain refiner prepared by PM, based on 0.01 wt% Ti addition. The grain refinement efficiency begins to decrease slightly when the grain refiner is kept in the melt for 60 min. The grain refinement is attributed to high stability, proper size, and high density of Al3Ti, TiB2, and TiC particles. © 2015 The Nonferrous Metals Society of China and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg

Whether artificial aging temperature of heat treatment can be reduced on the condition of all kinds of product performance meeting requirements was studied through using test bars and hardness blocks of gravity die casting, performing artificial aging treatment under different temperature and time after the solution heat treatment at 540℃ for 6 h The mechanical properties were tested before and after painting, and the variation rules of aging treatment process and the effect of painting process were summarized. On the basis of the above, after sampling test bars from the outer flange, inner flange, spoke and taking hardness blocks from the wheel hub, the artificial aging treatment was carried out. The temperature and time will be according to the process parameters of 125℃ for 3 h, 135℃ for 3 h; 145℃ for 3 h. The mechanical properties were tested and the grain size was analyzed before and after the painting. The test results show that compared with the current artificial aging process which is 155℃, 3 h, it can fully meet all kinds of product performance requirements for 130℃, 3 h saving the energy and cost.

The influence of different content of Si and Mg on the performance of A356 Al alloy wheels was studied, the tests of mechanical properties were conducted with outer flange tensile test bars on A356 Al alloy wheels with different content of Si and Mg after T6 heat treatment. Also, the impact test and bending fatigue test were conducted to the wheels. According to the test results, the change of Mg content has more influence on alloy performance than Si content; when there is 7% Si and 0.32% Mg in a wheel, its performance of impact resistance and bending fatigue resistance is the best.

The purpose is to solve the problem of designing casting mould structure with inserting method for Al alloy spoke of two-piece wheels. According to the analysis for the conventional gravity mold structure and the closing and opening order of mould, the technologies were determined, a proper closing and opening order of spoke mold, the dowel was fixed in the upper mold, the notch and stiletto in the side mole, the guide key was fixed on the bottom of the side-moulds, the question for fixing the inserts was solved correctly. An analysis has been made for casting forming by using the numerical simulation software ProCAST. In the analysis, processing methods for the defects locations which may appear in the castings have been pointed out as well as the one for inserts controlling. Therefore, the solution for mould structure design has been determined.

To study the influence of natural aging on the performance of A356 aluminum alloy wheel and solve the problem of unqualified impact test, wheels are naturally aged for 0 h, 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 96 h separately at room temperature after solution treatment at 540℃ for 6 h, then artificially aged immediately at 130℃ for 3 h separately. The mechanical properties of sample bars from outer flange and spoke, hardness of sample from hub were tested. The impact and bending fatigue properties were tested on finished wheels. The results show that after natural aging, tensile strength, yield strength and hardness tend to decrease, but elongation tends to increase. After 48 h natural aging, product can meet all requirements and the problem of unqualified impact test was solved. ©, 2015, Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society. All right reserved.

With the rapid development of automobile industry, wide attention has been drawn to the castings quality standard of aluminum alloy wheels which are important security parts of vehicles. The publication of Aluminum Alloy Wheel Castings for Passenger Cars (GB/T31203-2014) standard specifies important indexes for aluminum alloy wheel castings of passenger cars such as chemical compositions, mechanical properties, shape, size, weight, surface quality and internal quality, involving specification on aspects of technical requirements, test methods, inspection rules and signs, packaging, storage and transportation, etc. In this paper, there is a detailed interpretation for the origin and main reasons of above specification, characteristics of the standard, differences between domestic and foreign standards, as well as application of the standard, which is suitable for the implementation of Aluminum Alloy Wheel Castings for Passenger Cars standard. © 2015, Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society.
