A field experiment was conducted during 2002 to 2005 at Central Sugarcane Resaerch Station, Padegaon, Maharashtra (India) to assess the possibility of replacing chemical fertilizers by using organic sources and its influence on bio-physico chemical properties of soil, yield and quality of pre-seasonal sugarcane. Application of recommended dose of NPK with FYM and the recommended dose of NPK with trash incorporation recorded significantly higher cane (117 and 107 t ha-1) and Commercial Cane Sugar yield (16.5 and 15.42 t ha-1) for plant cane and ratoon crops respectively. Results clearly indicated that, use of chemical fertilizers alone or organic manures alone were not found beneficial for sugarcane crop as compared to integrated use of chemical and organics. There were no much changes in soil pH and EC. However, soil organic carbon content and available nutrients were improved slightly in the treatments where, organic sources were used. A field experiment was conducted during 2002-04, 2003-05 and 2004-06 for three plant canes at Central Sugarcane Research Station, Padegaon, Maharashtra, India to assess the possibility to reduce nitrogen dose by growing green manuring crops in preseasonal sugarcane and to find out suitable green manuring intercrop in preseasonal sugarcane. Amongst all green manures as intercrops berseem (Trifolium alexandrium) had registered highest green yield in three successive cutting at 55, 75 and 100 days followed by lucem (Medicago Sativare), sunhemp (Crotolaria juncea) and dhaincha (Sesbania aculeate). Significantly highest cane yield (119.851 ha-1), CCS yield (15.631 ha-1) was recorded when berseem (Trifolium alexandrium) was taken as green manuring crop in preseasonal sugarcane. Whereas in case of N levels 100 per cent N recorded significantly highest cane yield (123.64 t ha-1), CCS yield (16.03 t ha-1) and average cane weight (1.19 kg). The berseem (Trifolium alexandrium), lucern (Medicago Sativare) and sunhemp (Crotolaria juncea) recorded significantly higher organic carbon content than dhaincha (Sesbania aculeate). As regard fertility status at harvest, berseem (Trifolium alexandrium) recorded significantly highest available N (220 kg ha-1) and K (403 kg ha-1). A study was conducted during 2006-08 to characterize Bacillus thuringiensis isolates from Kerala, pathogenic to Spodoptera litura were characterized by RAPD-PCR technique using 10 decamer primers. The similarity coefficients of the isolates ranged from 0.24 to 0.39. Isolates, KAU 11 and KAU 166 showed maximum similarity (0.39). Minimum similarity was observed between KAU 51 and KAU 11 (0.24). The isolates, KAU 51 and the standard reference strain, HD 1 showed a similarity coefficient of 0.38.

The experiment was conducted at Banana Research Station, Jalgaon for three years (2005-2009) with an objective to find out a suitable intercrop for Mrig Baug (June planting) banana and its effects on growth and yield of banana. The intercrops of Black gram, Green gram, Sesame, Cowpea and Soybean along with a control (Banana sole crop) were assessed. Among the intercrops, Banana + Cowpea was proved to be ideal with maximum number of functional leaves at flowering (12.64), the least days for flowering (243.87) and harvesting (337.91), maximum number of hands per bunch (10.27), fingers per bunch (166.26), maximum finger length (22.22 cm), finger girth (12.63 cm), bunch weight (19.42 kg) and yield per ha (86.29 MT). The experiment was conducted for three years (2005-2009) at Banana Research Station, Jalgaon with an objective to find out a suitable intercrop with banana on the basis of their economical performance. The treatments were Banana + Black gram, Banana + Green gram, Banana + Sesamum, Banana + Cowpea and Banana + Soybean along with a control (Banana sole crop). Among the intercrops studied, Cowpea and Green gram were proved to be ideal intercrops with banana crop providing the highest monetary returns per hectare of Rs. 2,01,605/- and Rs. 1,78,793/- were obtained when banana was intercropped with Cowpea and Green gram respectively. The benefit cost ratios of cowpea and green gram intercrops were 2.44 and 2.28 respectively. The highest Sustainable Value Index (0.81) was noticed with Banana + Cowpea treatment followed by Banana + Green gram (0.69). © EM International.

Two separate field experiments were conducted at Post Graduate Institute, Mahatma Phule Agricultural University, Rahuri, Maharashtra on wheat and chickpea crops to test the effect of rock phosphate (RP) along with organic manures on an Inceptisols (Vertic Haplustepts) with ten treatments viz. absolute control, P control (recommended dose of N and K excluding P), recommended dose of N and K along with RP, RP+ phosphorus solubilizing bacteria (PSB), RP+pressmud cake+PSB, RP+FYM+PSB, RP+vermicompost + PSB, RP+fresh cow dung+PSB, RP+post biomethanated spentwash+PSB and single superphosphate (SSP). The incubation of RP in organic manures and PSB proved better for increasing the availability of major nutrients for both crops. Availability of P at 90 days after sowing and at harvest was significantly increased by incorporation of RP incubated with fresh cow dung and PSB. The nutrient uptake by both crops was also increased due to the application of RP with organic manures and PSB. This improvement in availability of nutrients ultimately resulted in significant increase in yield of both the crops over absolute control, P control and RP treatments. Among the organic manure treatments the availability of N and P and yield of both crops was highest in RP+fresh cow dung+PSB treatment.
