Several metallic tartrates deserve special attention due to their various applications. In the present investigation, mixed tartrate crystals of three different metals are reported. Using single diffusion gel growth technique, iron-nickel-manganese (Fe-Ni-Mn) ternary levo-tartrate compound crystals were grown with different concentrations. Spherulitic crystals with different coloration were obtained for various concentrations of metals. The concentrations of metals were determined by EDAX. The presence of functional groups was confirmed using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. The powder XRD study suggested that the crystals belong to the orthorhombic system. The thermal stability of all the samples was studied from room temperature to 900 C. It was found that the composition of the crystal affects the dehydration and decomposition behaviors. Pure manganese tartrate and copper tartrate compounds find various applications. In the present study, manganese-copper mixed levo tartrate crystals of different compositions have been grown by single diffusion gel growth technique in silica hydro gel. Purple blue colored mainly dendrite type crystals with orthorhombic system were grown. From EDAX analysis, the estimation of the presence of copper and manganese was made in the crystal. The coloration of the crystals as well their unit cell dimensions changed with the contents of copper and manganese. The presence of various functional groups was confirmed from FTIR spectra and the effect of composition of the crystals on the spectra was identified. The crystals were found to be hydrated and thermally unstable. Results are discussed. © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Source

The study reports nanoparticles synthesis of Mg xMn 1-xFe 2O 4 (x = 0.0, 0.2, 0.4, 0.5, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0) spinel ferrite system using the chemical co-precipitation technique and describe the forming mechanism responsible for subsequent changes in grain morphology on Mg2+-substitution. The mean particle size of MnFe 2O 4 (x = 0.0) is found to be ~40 nm, which decreases with increasing Mg-content (x) and becomes ~27 nm for x = 0.5 composition. The shape of particles gradually transforms from spherical (x = 0.0-0.5) to lamellar (x = 0.6-0.8) to thick needle shape (x = 1.0), as revealed by transmission electron microscopic analysis. The morphological changes have been explained on the basis of role of NaOH, H 2O 2 and Mg 2+ in governing rate of growth of planes of nanocrystals. © 2012 American Scientific Publishers. Source

Two thermophilic strains of actinomycetes, KS-52 and KS-60, were induced to produce α-amylase. α- Amylase activity was determined on solid medium supplemented with starch. The detection was based on the formation of clear or transparent zones around colonies. The size of transparent zone was found to be proportional to the amount of α-amylase enzyme produced by the strains. Extraction of α-amylase was done in liquid medium. The assay was observed by measuring the release of reducing sugar (RS) by 3,5- dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) method and expressed in International Units (IU). The thermophilic strains were further tested for their ability to produce α-amylase enzyme by growing them on two different substrates - soluble starch (1%) and corn starch (1%). Optimization of the α-amylase production activity was achieved through variations of parameters including pH, incubation period, temperature, and carbon sources. © 2011 Academic Journals. Source
