Due to their efficient osteoclastic inhibitor effect in bone metabolism and antiangiogenic activity, bisphosphonates are widely used in many cancer diseases particularly in prostate cancers with bone metastasis, lung cancer, breast cancer and multiple myeloma, as well as in systemic diseases such as osteoporosis, osteopenia, Paget disease and osteogenesis imperfect for the last 13 years. Prostate cancer is a common cancer in males and it is the leading cause of bone metastasis. Mandibular metastasis is rarely encountered during the course of prostate cancer. Mandibular osteonecrosis as well has begun to be observed along with the availability of more efficient and stronger formulations developed following the use of bisphosphonates. Zolendronic acid, which has been used also by our patient, has widely come into practice as a 3rd generation bisphosphonate. Because of prostate cancer and widespread bone metastases, our patient has been receiving zolendronic acid with maximum androgen blockage for 4 years. Tomography of the patient, who has undergone intensive treatment because of submandibular abscess, demonstrated extensive osteonecrosis in the fovea sublingual region of the mandible corpus. In large series, although, mandibular osteonecrosis was widely seen due to bisphosphonate use for the metastases of lung and breast cancers, this rate was between 9.6% and 11% for prostate cancer within the series. Although our patient had no mandibular metastasis before, mandibular necrosis was observed due to long-term bisphosphonate use. The treatment of post-pneumonectomy bronchopleural fistula requires both closure of the fistula and control of the infection usually by obliteration of the thoracic cavity. A 53-year-old man developed a large airway defect (4 × 2 cm) after right pneumonectomy performed for lung cancer. To close such a large defect a two-stage operation consisting of omentoplasty and free lattisimus dorsi muscle flap transposition was performed. This report illustrates the feasibility of overcoming this demanding complication with collaboration of plastic surgery. © 2015, Indian Association of Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgeons. Source

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of rectal ozone and intratympanic ozone therapy on cisplatin-induced ototoxicity in rats. Eighteen female Wistar albino rats were included in our study. External auditory canal and tympanic membrane examinations were normal in all rats. The rats were randomly divided into three groups. Initially, all the rats were tested with distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE), and emissions were measured normally. All rats were injected with 5-mg/kg/day cisplatin for 3 days intraperitoneally. Ototoxicy had developed in all rats, as confirmed with DPOAE after 1 week. Rectal and intratympanic ozone therapy group was Group 1. No treatment was administered for the rats in Group 2 as the control group. The rats in Group 3 were treated with rectal ozone. All the rats were tested with DPOAE under general anesthesia, and all were sacrificed for pathological examination 1 week after ozone administration. Their cochleas were removed. The outer hair cell damage and stria vascularis damage were examined. In the statistical analysis conducted, a statistically significant difference between Group 1 and Group 2 was observed in all frequencies according to the DPOAE test. In addition, between Group 2 and Group 3, a statistically significant difference was observed in the DPOAE test. However, a statistically significant difference was not observed between Group 1 and Group 3 according to the DPOAE test. According to histopathological scoring, the outer hair cell damage score was statistically significantly high in Group 2 compared with Group 1. In addition, the outer hair cell damage score was also statistically significantly high in Group 2 compared with Group 3. Outer hair cell damage scores were low in Group 1 and Group 3, but there was no statistically significant difference between these groups. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups in terms of stria vascularis damage score examinations. Systemic ozone gas therapy is effective in the treatment of cell damage in cisplatin-induced ototoxicity. The intratympanic administration of ozone gas does not have any additional advantage over the rectal administration. © 2016 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg Source

The ranula is a retention cyst that is very thin-walled and odd-looking, which usually appears on the anterior part of the mouth floor. These rare sialoceles appear as bluish, transparent, smooth-surfaced, bustling and painless masses. In this article a 13 year-old girl with sublingual ranula, which occured after a sublingual injection in the course of the dental procedure, was presented. The patient was referred to us due to her difficulty in swallowing and speeching, and a terrible image of her oral lesion. The diagnosis of the sublingual oral ranula was made with the typical history and findings of clinical examination and the lesion was treated with total surgical excision. The histopathological examination showed a pseudocyst which had no lining epithelium and had mucinous content. The patient was presented due to the rarity of this size of the simple ranula, and the fact that it has not been reported in neither dermatology nor family medicine literature previously. © 2014, Nobelmedicus. Introduction: This study aims to histopathologically, biomechanically, and immunohistochemically compare the fourth-week efficiencies of local platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (rBM-MSC) treatments of the Achilles tendon ruptures created surgically in rats. Materials and Methods: The study included 35 12-month-old male Sprague Dawley rats, with an average weight of 400–500 g. Five rats were used as donors for MSC and PRP, and 30 rats were separated into MSC, PRP, and control groups (n = 10). The Achilles tendons of the rats were cut transversely, the MSC from bone marrow was administered to the MSC group, the PRP group received PRP, and the control group received physiological saline to create the same surgical effect. In previous studies, it was shown that this physiological saline does not have any effect on tendon recovery. Thirty days after the treatment, the rats were sacrificed and their Achilles tendons were examined histopathologically, immunohistochemically, and biomechanically. Results: The use of rBM-MSC and PRP in the Achilles tendon ruptures when the tendon is in its weakest phase positively affected the recovery of the tendon in histopathologic, immunohistochemical, and biomechanical manners compared to the control group (p < 0.05). While the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α, IFNγ, and IL 1β were significantly low, the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors playing key roles in tendon recovery, such as IL2, VEGF, transforming growth factor-beta, and HGF, were significantly higher in the MSC group than those of the PRP and control groups (p < 0.05). In the MSC group, the (Formula presented.) (mm) value was significantly higher (p ˂ 0.05) than that in the PRP and control groups. Conclusion: rBM-MSC and PRP promote the recovery of the tendon and increase its structural strength. The use of PRP and MSC provides hope for the treatment of the Achilles tendon ruptures that limit human beings’ functionalities and quality of life, particularly for athletes. It is thought that the use of MSC can be more effective for tendon healing; hence, more extensive and advanced studies are needed on this topic. © 2016 Taylor & Francis Source
