BACKGROUND: Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD) is characterized by progressive replacement of ventricular myocytes with variable amounts of fibrous and adipose tissue. Several studies have suggested that the interval from the peak to the end of the electrocardiographic T wave (Tp-e) may correspond to the transmural dispersion of repolarization and that increased Tp-e interval and Tp-e/QT ratio are associated with malignant ventricular arrhythmias. The aim of this study was to evaluate repolarization dispersion measured from the 12-lead surface electrocardiogram (including Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT, and Tp-e/QTc ratio) in asymptomatic ARVD patients METHODS: We selected 27 patients with asymptomatic ARVD and 27 age- and gender-match young, healthy volunteers.RESULTS: Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT and Tp-e/QTc ratio were also significantly higher in ARVD group compared to the control group (all P < 0.001). There were negative correlation between S global and Tp-e, Tp-e/QT, Tp-e/QTc ration (r = -0.57, P = 0.02; r = -0.85, P = 0.02; r = -0.63, P < 0.01; respectively). There were also negative correlation between Sm global and Tp-e, Tp-e/QT, Tp-e/QTc ration (r = -0.61, P < 0.01; r = -0.67, P < 0.01; r = -0.68, P < 0.01; respectively). Moreover, Em global were negative correlation between Tp-e, Tp-e/QT, and Tp-e/QTc (r = - 0.64, P < 0.001, r = - 0.75, P < 0.01; r = -0,69, P < 0.01; respectively) CONCLUSION: In conclusion, we have presented strong evidence suggesting that Tp-e interval, Tp-e/QT ratio, and Tp-e/QTc ratio were increased in asymptomatic ARVD patients. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting men. Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is accepted as the primary treatment modality of advanced or metastatic prostate cancer. Erectile dysfunction and loss of libido are well-known side effects of ADT. In the previous studies, androgens have been demonstrated to play an important role in erectile physiology. However, the molecular mechanisms involving this issue have not been completely understood yet. The objective of this review is the assessment of ADT’s effects on sexual functions in light of the current literature. © 2015, Nobelmedicus. All rights reserved.

To compare the efficacy of two natural surfactants for pulmonary hemorrhage in very low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants.A prospective randomized controlled trial was conducted on 42 infants who were divided into two groups, poractant alfa (n=21) and beractant (n=21).In both the groups, the mean standard deviation (SD) birth-weight and gestational age were similar (p=0.33 and 0.89, respectively). Although, the mean oxygenation index (OI) increased after pulmonary hemorrhage compared with baseline value and decreased after surfactant in both groups, variations in OI were more prominent in poractant alfa group (before hemorrhage: 11.9, after hemorrhage: 22.7, 1 hour of surfactant: 14.6, 8th hour of surfactant: 7.8, 24th hour of surfactant: 8.5, p=0.007 vs. before pulmonary hemorrhage:11.1, after pulmonary hemorrhage: 17.9, 1 hour of surfactant: 12.8, 8th hour of surfactant: 12.8, 24th hour of surfactant: 9.7, p=0.02). There was no significant difference between the groups for OI values at all time points (p>0.05). The rates of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and mortality related to pulmonary hemorrhage were similar in both the groups. Both natural surfactants improved oxygenation when administered for pulmonary hemorrhage in VLBW infants. The type of surfactant seems to have no effect on BPD and mortality rates in these patients.

Objective: The aim of this study is testing the value of H-FABP in the early diagnosis of ACS alone or with routinely used biomarkers such as myoglobin, CK-MB, and cTn I in patients who admitted to emergency department (ED) with complaint of chest pain and suspected acute coronary syndrome.Material and Methods: This prospective and cross-sectional study was performed at the Emergency Department of University hospital between June 2009 and September 2010. Patients who were admitted with chest pain within first 48 hours and suspected ACS were enrolled to the study. Blood samples were taken for CK-MB, myoglobin, cTnI and H-FABP The patients were divided into two groups (ACS and non ACS). Statistical analyse were used for relation of biomarkers with diagnosis of ACS.Results: A 66 patients were included to the study. H-FAPB values were positive in15.2% patients. When H-FABP was added to routinely used biomarkers in the diagnosis of ACS, increasing was observed in all sensitivity, specificity, PPV and NPV values. However, this increase was not stastistically significant. Conclusion: H-FABP did not provide any significant change in early diagnosis and exclusion of ACS diagnosis when used either alone or combination with routinely used biomarkers. © 2014 Makerere University, Medical School. A degloving injury is referred to as seperation of cutaneous tissue from the deeper structures of the body. Although many methods have been defined to reform the tissue integrity; defatting and readaptation of the avulsed flap still comprises one of the most effective methods. From 2000-2012, we treated a total of nine patients with avulsed extremities with defatting and readaptation of the same flap. The fat compartment of the flaps was removed and the skin was meshed. The patients were followed-up with for an average of 12 months (range: 8-18 months).Total closure of the defect and healing was achieved in seven patients. Although 30% of the total surface area of the graft was lost in one patient, and 10% in another, total epithelialization was achieved later with secondary grafting.Defatting, meshing and readaptation of the same flap to its original site is still a valuable option for avulsion injuries because of the relative ease of the procedure, shorter operative times, and usability of the procedure by general surgeons. This technique might be particularly important in places where a reconstructive plastic surgeon is not available.
