The study validated the antidyslipidemic, antioxidant, and antihyperglycemic effects of Lagenariasiceraria fruit extract in human subjects with dyslipidemia along with subjects of normal health. A total of 200 mL of freshly prepared Lagenariasiceraria fruit extract was administered daily on empty stomach for 90 days. Significant reductions (P < .01) were found in triglycerides and total cholesterol levels in blood. Cardiac risk ratio, atherogenic coefficient, and atherogenicity index of plasma were also improved. Appreciable reductions in body mass index (P < .01) and blood pressure (systolic P < .01, diastolic P < .05) along with a significant reduction (P < .05) in fasting blood glucose levels were also observed in these subjects. Lagenariasiceraria fruit extract exhibited significant antioxidant activity in dyslipidemic subjects as evident from elevations in SOD (P < .05) and GSH levels (P < .01) with marked improvement in catalase (P < .01) and TBARS levels (P < .05). Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of saponins, glycosides, flavonoids, terpenoids, and phenolic compounds. Lagenariasiceraria fruit extract serves as dietary adjunct in treatment of human dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease. © The Author(s) 2014.

The present paper reports the thermoluminescence (TL) glow curve of Eu 2+-activated SrAl2O4 phosphor with different UV exposure times. Evaluation of kinetic parameters was done by the peak shape method. The recorded glow curve shifts towards lower temperatures with respect to increasing UV exposure time. The peaks were found at 146.76, 141.34 and 140.37 C, respectively, for 5, 10 and 15 min of UV exposure using the heating rate of 3 C s-1. The glow peak shows the second-order kinetics. Different kinetic parameters, i.e. trap depth, order of kinetics, activation energy, and frequency factor are also calculated. The XRD pattern of the sample is compared with reported XRD using the software match. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

This paper reports TL glow curve analysis and evaluation of kinetic parameter for Amarnath stone collected from Amarnath Holy Cave. TL was recorded with different heating rates (3.3, 4, 6.7, 8, and 10 s-1). The samples gave good TL peaks at 310, 314, 308, 323, and 327 C for the different heating rates. The corresponding activation energy (E) values were calculated. The peaks were indicative of second-order kinetics. Samples were characterized by XRD analysis. Inductively coupled plasma activated emission spectroscopic (ICP-AES) analysis was performed to determine percentages of elements in the natural mineral. Results from ICP-AES and XRF (X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy) studies were compared. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Facile and low-cost aqueous chemical bath deposition route has been demonstrated to fabricate Eu- and Sm-doped ZnO microstructures. The effect of Eu and Sm ions on the morphology of the ZnO was investigated. The synthesized doped ZnO microstructures were systematically characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectra. FESEM images depicted the formation of Eu-doped ZnO microsphere and Sm-doped ZnO microplates. XRD spectra showed single crystalline nature of the undoped ZnO microdisks, whereas Eu- and Sm-doped ZnO exhibited the polycrystalline nature. The presence of Eu and Sm ions in the ZnO matrix was confirmed by XPS. This means that all the Eu ions substituted Zn2+ as Eu2+ into the ZnO matrix, whereas most of Sm ions were being in the trivalent state. This was probably due to the segregation of Sm2O3 species on the surface of ZnO microstructures. © Indian Academy of Sciences.

This paper presents a green and cost-effective recipe for the synthesis of blue-emitting ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) using cellulose bio-templates. Azadirachta indica (neem) leaf extract prepared in different solvents were used as biological templates to produce nanostructures of wurtzite ZnO with a particle size ~12-36 nm. A cellulose-driven capping mechanism is used to describe the morphology of ZnO NPs. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infra-red (FTIR) and photoluminescence (PL) studies showed that solvents affect the growth process and the capping mechanism of bio-template severely. Structural changes in ZnO NPs were evident with variation in pH, dielectric constants (DC) and boiling points (BP) of solvents. Furthermore, an energy band model is proposed to explain the origin of the blue emission in the as-obtained ZnO NPs. PL excitation studies and the theoretical enthalpy values of individual defects were used to establish the association between the interstitial-zinc-related defect levels and the blue emission.
