The new Terminal 3 was built as part of the significant expansion and modernization to increase passenger capacities at Sheremetyevo Airport in Moscow (Figure 1). Bollinger + Grohmann Ingenieure carried out the structural design for various canopies and a footbridge between parking garage and terminal building under the supervision of the Arnold AG. In the later stage of the project Müller Offenburg GmbH & Co. KG (MOG), Heinrich Lamparter Stahlbau GmbH & Co. KG (StaLA) and the Radabau GmbH were assigned the manufacturing contract. A multi-span bridge built at Frankfurt Airport with a length of 400 m was completed early this year. The bridge consists of a box girder that is subdivided into beams and incorporates a cable guided mini-metro ©. The array of vertical and horizontal diagonals appears to be random, but is constituting an effective structural system. The necessary load bearing capacity is not a priori achieved by setting up the structure manually in a top-down approach, but emerges during an algorithmic generation process. A numerousness of possible solutions is automatically designed and structurally evaluated. By using evolutionary methods these structures are optimized until one optimal solution is found. Due to fatigue loading the connection of the diagonals to the chords had to be designed and calculated with Finite Element Method using the IIW-guideline "Fatigue design of welded joints and components". © Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co. Curved glazing puts special requirements onto the planning and calculation process at the course of the project. The wide range of glass usage, geometries, processing and finishing, causes a detailed analysis of its requirements. Thereby new methods of computer based design and analysis play an increasing greater role. The example of the new entrance pavilion at the SAP Arena in Mannheim, the advantages and disadvantages of traditional and generative processes were examined in a comparative analysis. The pavilions, designed by the architects Meixner Schlüter Wendt, offered by their free-form layout geometries an ideal foundation for the consideration of design processes. Beside a classic design process with different cad tools and calculation programs, a parametric process including geometry optimization and calculation combined in a single program environment, was performed. © 2015 Ernst & Sohn GmbH & Co.
