In this study, the mechanics of deformation (under the tension) and the stability of an elastic beam with a nanocoating under an axial compression are investigated. The behavior of the construction is modeled by the two-layered beam. The basic relations of the first layer, that is, an elastic beam gives in the framework of Hook's law and the basic relations of the second layer, that is, the coating is carried out taking into account discreteness of the nanomaterial. First, the strain-stress relations of the elastic beam with nanocoating under axial tensile load are obtained. Then, stability equations of layered beam consisting of two elastic layers and elastic beam with the nanocoating subjected to a uniform axial compression are obtained, respectively. The dimensionless critical axial load parameter, that is, the ratio of the critical axial load of elastic beam with nanocoating to the critical axial load of layered beam consisting of two elastic layers is found. Finally, carrying out some computations, effects of the characteristics of a nanocoating on the values of the dimensionless critical axial load parameter have been studied. © The Author(s) 2011 Reprints and permissions: sagepub.co.uk/ journalsPermissions.nav. The influence of climate changes in Eurasia on the Caspian Sea level fluctuations in the Holocene is studied on the basis of historical data. The correspondence of the Late Khvalyn transgression to the time of the thawing of the European (Scandinavian) ice cap is revealed as well as that of the climatic optimum of the Holocene to the Boreal period (10-8 thousand years ago). In the next New-Caspian epoch, the Caspian Sea regression occurred. In this study, the stability analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) cylindrical, truncated and complete conical shells subjected to combined loads and resting on elastic foundations for two boundary conditions is investigated. The functionally graded material properties are assumed to vary continuously through the thickness of the conical shell. At first, the basic relations, the stability and compatibility equations of the FGM truncated conical shell on the Pasternak-type elastic foundation are obtained. By applying the Galerkin method to the foregoing equations, the critical combined loads of clamped-clamped and sliding-sliding FGM shells on the Pasternak-type elastic foundation are obtained. Finally, carrying out some computations, effects of the elastic foundation, boundary conditions, the variation of shell characteristics and material composition profiles on the values of critical combined loads have been studied. © 2011 Springer-Verlag. In this study, a stress analysis of a substrate coated by nanomaterials with a vacancy under uniform extension load is investigated. The behavior of the coated substrate is modeled with the behavior of a twolayered beam, in which one of the layers is elastic and described by the continuous medium and the second layer consists of a nanomaterial with damage of a vacancy. The extension of the coating is carried out by stretching of the first layer, which lies on the substrate and by the cohesive forces between the layers. It is assumed that vacancies do not vary along the width of the substrate. The constitutive equations of the first layer (i.e., an elastic substrate) are given in the framework of Hooke's law and the constitutive equations of the second layer; that is, the coating is carried out by taking into account discreteness of the nanomaterial with a vacancy. The expressions for the determination of the contact pressure and stresses of the substrate with a nanocoating that have vacancies are obtained. In addition, damage conditions for the substrate and nanocoating are determined. Finally, carrying out some computations, effects of the characteristics of a nanocoating with and without vacancies on the values of contact pressure and stresses of the coated substrate have been studied. © Springer-Verlag 2012.
