The surface residual stress and microhardness induced by laser shock peening with different overlapping rate of laser spot on the martensitic stainless steel 1Cr11Ni2W2MoV were tested, and the effects of overlapping rate were investigated. The results show that the residual stress and microhardness increase with the overlapping rate improved, meanwhile the fluctuation of residual stress is decreased by 60% and the fluctuation of microhardness is decreased by 65% as the overlapping rate is increased from 50% to 75%. It is shown that increasing overlapping rate can optimize the distribution of residual stress and microhardness around the laser spot.
