Double reducing threshold of laser oscillation between two crystals of equal geometry (3x3x10 mm3) and different pump absorption (80 and 50 %, correspondingly) was observed. For both cases the value of slope efficiency was nearly 22%. The lowest threshold of absorbed pump power 360 mW with 2% OC was measured for series crystals with small pump absorption. The focusing of pump beam was no tight (waist radius 38 mm) in comparison with similar experiments with forsterite crystals. © 2011 Copyright Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE).

72-fs pulses are generated at the first Stokes component frequency upon stimulated Raman scattering in a barium nitrate crystal for the radiation of the Ti3+:A12O3 laser with the pulse duration of 50 fs. The energy efficiency of conversion is 20%. The barium nitrate crystal was optically pumped by two consecutive orthogonally polarised chirped pulses with the following time compression of the Stokes radiation pulse. © 2010 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.

The process of nonlinear rotation of the polarization ellipse of laser radiation, occurring simultaneously with the broadening of the pulse spectrum due to nonlinear self-phase modulation in a gas-filled capillary, is studied. It is shown that the maximal rotation of the polarisation ellipse is experienced by the spectral components, shifted towards the short-wavelength side with respect to the central wavelength of the initial laser pulse. Using the effect of polarisation ellipse rotation, an eightfold increase in the energy contrast ratio of a 28-fs light pulse, obtained by compression of the radiation pulse from an ytterbium laser with the duration 290 fs, is implemented. © 2012 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.

A 290-fs radiation pulse of an ytterbium laser system with a central wavelength of 1028 nm and an energy of 145 lJ was compressed to a 27-fs pulse with an energy of 75 lJ. The compression was realised on the basis of the effect of pulse spectrum broadening in a xenon-filled glass capillary for a pulse repetition rate of 3 kHz. © 2011 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.

A 300-fs radiation pulse of an ytterbium laser with a wavelength of 1030 nm and energy of 150 mJ were converted to a 15-fs pulse with a wavelength of 515 nm by broadening the emission spectrum in a capillary filled with xenon and by generating the second harmonic in a KDP crystal. A relation between the degree of pulse compression and energy efficiency is derived for femtosecond laser pulse compressors that utilise spectral broadening of pulses in a gas-filled capillary. We show that the degree of compression has a maximum at an nergy efficiency from 15 % to 30 %. A 15-fold compression of a 290-fs pulse with an energy efficiency of 24 % is demonstrated. © 2011 Kvantovaya Elektronika and Turpion Ltd.

In this letter, we report on a particularly strong optical nonlinearity at the nanometer scale in aluminum. A strong optical nonlinearity of the third order was demonstrated on a single nanoslit. Single nanoslits of different aspect ratio were excited by a laser pulse (120 fs) at the wavelength 1.5 μm, leading predominantly to third-harmonic generation (THG). It has been shown that strong surface plasmon resonance in a nanoslit allows the realization of an effective nanolocalized source of third-harmonic radiation. We show also that a nanoslit in a metal film has a significant advantage in nonlinear processes over its Babinet complementary nanostructure (nanorod): the effective abstraction of heat in a film with a slit makes it possible to use much higher laser radiation intensities. © 2013 Astro Ltd.
