According to the reports of Z.E. Horvath et al [1] and Liu Yun-quan et al [5], carbon nanotubes can be synthesized by spray pyrolysis from different carbon sources (n-pentane, n-hexane, n-heptane, cyclohexane, toluene and acrylonitrile) and several metallocene catalysts (ferrocene, cobaltocene and nickelocene). This paper describes two different existing methods for growth of carbon nanotubes and the influence of applied parameters (oven temperature, synthesis time, catalyst concentration, carrier gas flow and solution flow) on the CNT's morphology. Also, a possible influence of number of carbons in carbon sources and structures of their compounds (linear or aromatic) on properties of formed carbon nanotubes. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy were applied for characterization of obtained materials. © 2015 Materials Research Society.

Context: The bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae (Pss) is a pathogen of many plant species and causes, for example, brown spot disease in bean plants (Phaseolus vulgaris). Pss excretes the syringolins, natural product molecules that act as a virulence factors and inhibit the proteasome of the host plants. Objective: Proteasome inhibitors belong to an important class of anticancer agents and bortezomib (Velcade ®) has been Food and Drug Administration-approved for the treatment of multiple myeloma (MM) and mantle cell lymphoma. Syringolins represent a new class of proteasome inhibitors and the present work was undertaken to design a potent syringolin-inspired analogue (TIR-203) for anticancer drug development. Materials and methods: TIR-203 was tested against human MM and neuroblastoma (NB) cells. Cancer cells were treated with TIR-203 at various concentrations (010 M) and the cell viability was measured using the MTS assay. To determine the effects on proteasomal activities, the cell culture-based proteasome inhibition assay was used. Syringolin A (SylA) and bortezomib were included as controls. Results: TIR-203 inhibited the cell proliferation of MM and NB cells in a dose-dependent manner at significantly lower concentrations than SylA. In MM cells, TIR-203 effectively inhibited the chymotrypsin-like (CT-L), caspase-like (C-L), and trypsin-like (T-L) activities of the proteasome. In NB cells, TIR-203 inhibited the CT-L and C-L activities, but not the T-L activity. Discussion and conclusions: The newly designed proteasome inhibitor TIR-203 is more potent than the natural product SylA and strongly inhibits the cell viability and proteasomal activity of MM and NB cells.

The adsorption isotherms of allspice essential oil microencapsulated in biopolymers blend (whey protein concentrate [WPC], mesquite gum [MG], and maltodextrin DE10 [MD]) in different proportions (WPC17%-MG17%-MD66% w/w and WPC66%-MG17%-MD17% w/w) with wall-to-core material ratios of 4:1 were determined at 25, 35, and 40°C. The isotherms were fitted using the Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer (GAB) model and the enthalpies and entropies, both differential and integral, were estimated by the Clausius-Clapeyron method. The minimum integral entropy was considered as the point of maximum stability where strong bonds between the adsorbate and adsorbent occurred, and water would be less available and likely to participate in spoilage reactions. The point of maximum stability was found between 13.79 and 15.11 kg H2O/100 kg d.s. (corresponding to water activity, aW, of 0.444-0.551) for the microcapsules with WPC17%- MG17%-MD66% w/w as wall material and 18.71-19.63 kg H2O/ 100 kg d.s. (aW0.591-0.713) for the microcapsules with WPC66%-MG17%-MD17% w/w as wall material in the temperature range studied. © 2011 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

To generate normative data for the Verbal Fluency Tests across 11 countries in Latin America, with country-specific adjustments for gender, age, and education, where appropriate.The sample consisted of 3,977 healthy adults who were recruited from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and, Puerto Rico. Each subject was administered the Verbal Fluency Test as part of a larger neuropsychological battery. A standardized five-step statistical procedure was used to generate the norms.The final multiple linear regression models for the letter F explained 8-30% of the variance, 7-32% for letter A, 8-32% for the letter S, and 16-43% for the animal category in Verbal Fluency Test scores. Although t-tests showed significant differences between men and women on the Verbal Fluency Test, they did not have an effect size larger than 0.3. As a result, gender-adjusted norms were not generated.This is the first normative multicenter study conducted in Latin America aiming to create norms for the Verbal Fluency Test; this study will have important outcomes for the future of neuropsychology in the region.

We have established a multicenter international consortium to better understand the natural history of acute pancreatitis (AP) worldwide and to develop a platform for future randomized clinical trials.The AP patient registry to examine novel therapies in clinical experience (APPRENTICE) was formed in July 2014. Detailed web-based questionnaires were then developed to prospectively capture information on demographics, etiology, pancreatitis history, comorbidities, risk factors, severity biomarkers, severity indices, health-care utilization, management strategies, and outcomes of AP patients.Between November 2015 and September 2016, a total of 20 sites (8 in the United States, 5 in Europe, 3 in South America, 2 in Mexico and 2 in India) prospectively enrolled 509 AP patients. All data were entered into the REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) database by participating centers and systematically reviewed by the coordinating site (University of Pittsburgh). The approaches and methodology are described in detail, along with an interim report on the demographic results.APPRENTICE, an international collaboration of tertiary AP centers throughout the world, has demonstrated the feasibility of building a large, prospective, multicenter patient registry to study AP. Analysis of the collected data may provide a greater understanding of AP and APPRENTICE will serve as a future platform for randomized clinical trials.

This paper proposes to combine the multipurpose digital filter (MDF) and the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) for the transmission lines impedance estimation under fault conditions. The digital filtering requirements in protecting relays are critical, because it is relevant to attain precise, fast, and reliable line impedance estimation from faulted current and voltage signals. In this paper, the proposed filter removes the exponentially decaying DC offset from the current signal, enhancing the impedance estimation under transient conditions, and reducing the time of estimation. Comparisons are made respect to the DFT with a one-cycle rectangular window. Simulations are carried out in order to assess the proposal. © 2015 IEEE.

Alzheimers Disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease associated with memory loss and gradual behavioral, functional and cognitive impairment. Conventional imaging studies, such as magnetic resonance or computed tomography have played a secondary role in AD diagnosis: While other causes of memory loss and cognitive deficit can be evaluated by these imaging methods, AD structural changes are not detected until very late in the course of the disease. Recent and more precise techniques have been developed to detect subtle changes not visualized with those imaging methods. This article presents a review of the neuroimaging techniques used as a diagnostic aid for AD.
