888 samples of wild boars (855 testicles, 33 animal bodies) were sent to the State Office for Agriculture, Food Safety and Fishery (LALLF) during the period from August 2008 to March 2009 for the examination for Brucellosis within a monitoring program. Necropsy was followed by histological, bacteriological and molecular biological examinations. In 14 cases pathological changes were present and in 17 cases Brucella spp. was isolated. Brucella specific DNA was detected in 20 samples of testicles. All samples with typical macroscopical changes were positive for Brucella spp. either by bacteriological culture or by PCR or by both methods. In 12 cases Brucella spp. was isolated from testicles without any pathological changes. All isolates were identified as Brucella suis biovar 2 by the National Reference Laboratory in Jena. According to our findings, Brucella suis has a prevalence of 2.9% in the population of wild boars in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
