Variable burning rate propellant is composed of layers of propellants which has the different burning rates. In order to explain the progressive combustibility of variable burning rate propellant, the three double-layer variable burning rate propellant samples were prepared, which had different inner to-outer layer thickness ratios. The shape feature amount and shape function were calculated. The graphic results of σ-Z and ω-Z show that, with the decrease in the thickness of combustion layer, the combustion area is gradually increased, and the growth rate of gas volume increases. Compared with the classic 5/7 propellant, the variable burning rate propellant has a more significant increase in growth surface, and a stronger progressive combustibility. p-t values of the samples were measured by closed bomb test, and Γ-Ψ curve was drawn. The results show the conditions of the progressive combustibility of samples with different inner-to-outer layer thickness ratios. The result from the closed bomb test result is consistent with the theoretical analysis. Source
