Hydraulic and lubricating systems are essential and integral parts of almost all stationary and mobile machines. In contrast to other drive technologies, decisive functions are important for the construction oil element of the hydraulic drives: The applied fluids function in power transmission, lubrication, the conduction of heat, the removal of impurities and in corrosion prevention. The state of a hydraulic machine is often reflected in the fluid. Besides the providing information about the operating condition of the fluid, oil monitoring also allows indirect information about the wear and tear condition of the machine.

To allow an efficient filtration design, descriptive models of the particle contamination in hydraulic systems were developed within the research project "Fluidtronic - development system for fluid technical mechatronic systems". This offers the possibility to simulate the dynamic distribution of particles inside fluid power systems. On one hand this allows the design of an ideal filtration concept for reliable plant operation, and in addition it also reveals new possibilities for a virtual condition monitoring development. The development engineer is able to check the particle size distribution at each point of the system, thus he can keep the contamination levels low at locations of sensitive components, such as servo valves. He is also able to analyse the amount of absorbed contamination in different filter elements, which leads to a better planning of maintenance intervals and results in shorter downtimes of the plant. One main pillar of the work are test benches which allow an analysis of the particle entrainment of the most important components, namely breather filters and piston rods. In this paper, the simulation environment as well as the test bench setups are explained. Furthermore results are discussed.

O+P 11-12/2010 reported on pages 448 to 452 about the motivation for the monitoring of the oil condition and the fundamentals of oils and solid impurities. O+P 1-2/2011 on pages 32 to 37 presented information on the different procedures of particle measurement technology and the corresponding devices and their application. The continuation deals in detail with the oil condition measurement technology, the signal output as well as the application and product examples.


In fluid power systems, the oil assumes a range of important tasks. It transmits performance, takes over the lubrication and the heat balance and transports the dirt to the filters. Scientific investigations prove that malfunctions in hydraulic and lubricating systems are predominantly caused by wear and tear, contamination, aging, mixing or severe temperature fluctuations. Hence, the orderly condition of the oil is of decisive importance. Simultaneously, information about the condition of the machine can be obtained from the current condition of the oil.

The reliability and availability of equipment is becoming increasingly important in the purchasing decision of equipment operators. Scientific investigations prove that malfunctions in hydraulic and lubrication systems are mainly caused by wear and tear, contamination, aging, mixture or severe temperature fluctuations of the oil. Hence, the correct condition of the oil is of decisive importance. At the same time, information about the condition of the machine can be obtained from the current condition of the oil.
