As desalination gains traction in the States, one of the numerous pretreatment challenges to overcome is the ability to handle the large fluctuations in influent TSS and turbidity that often occur with these water sources and to do so without incurring significant capital or operating and maintenance (O&M) costs. This paper will compare operating data of a pilot system treating the same seawater with and without the benefit of microfiber cloth pre-filtration. The pilot system is made up of two separate trains. On one train, seawater is strained and applied directly to the UF membrane without pre-conditioning by the filter. On the other train, seawater is passed through the filter and then sent through the UF membrane. During the pilot test, the influent quality is monitored. The operating parameters are initially set the same for each train, and the resultant pressures, feed pump amperages, TMPs, effluent quality, and permeabilities are measured for each train in order to estimate each train's O&M requirements. This paper will compare operating data acquired during the pilot run to ascertain the ability of each train to handle influent TSS fluctuations and to compare the life cycle costs with and without pre-filtration.
