A long-term pilot-scale H2-based membrane biofilm reactor (MBfR) was tested for removal of nitrate from actual groundwater. A key feature of this secondgeneration pilot MBfR is that it employed lower cost polyester hollow fibers and still achieved high loading rate. The steady-state maximum nitrate surface loading at which the effluent nitrate and nitrite concentrations were below the Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) was at least 5.9 g·N·(m2·d)-1, which corresponds to a maximum volumetric loading of at least 7.7 kg·N·(m3·d) -1. The steady-state maximum nitrate surface area loading was higher than the highest nitrate surface loading reported in the firstgeneration MBfRs using composite fibers (2.6 g·N·(m2·d)-1). This work also evaluated the H2-utilization efficiency in MBfR. The measured H2 supply rate was only slightly higher than the stoichiometric H2-utilization rate. Thus, H2 utilization was controlled by diffusion and was close to 100% efficiency, as long as biofilm accumulated on the polyester-fiber surface and the fibers had no leaks. © 2010 Higher Education Press and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

There are numerous component applications that would benefit from localized austempering (heat treating only a portion of the component) for either improved wear properties or fatigue strength. Currently available methods for "surface austempering" of ductile iron are often expensive and not as well controlled as would be desired. This study was undertaken to find a better process. Locally Austempered Ductile Iron (LADI) is the result of those efforts. LADI is a surface hardening heat treatment process that will produce a localized case depth of an ausferrite microstructure (ADI) in a desired area of a component. This process has been jointly developed by Ajax Tocco Magnethermic Corporation (ATM) and Applied Process, Inc.- Technologies Division (AP) with support and collaboration from ThyssenKrupp Waupaca, Inc. (TKW). This paper describes the outcome of using this patent pending process (US #65/195,131). © 2010 SAE International.

The machinability of various grades of austempered ductile iron (ADI) has been investigated for rough milling operations. ADI 900, ADI 1050 and ADI 1200 grades were commercially produced, commercially heat treated and machined under controlled conditions using coated carbide inserts with coolant in the laboratory. The milling performance of the various grades was compared to that of AISI/SAE 4340 with similar hardness. In this study, machinability characteristics relative to wear rate (ISO 8688-2) and machining forces were measured and related to initial microstructure and properties. These preliminary results have been used to establish initial rough milling machining guidelines for machining ADI with coated carbide milling inserts. © 2016 The Author(s). In order for the metalcasting industry to survive and thrive, it must he able to market itself and its products to its customers, next generation of employees and the communities in which its facilities reside. Unfortunately, this has not al-ways been done in a consistent fashion across the industry. This study was conducted to determine if austempered 4340 steel had different fatigue resistance compared to quench and tempered (Q&T) 4340 steel with an identical hardness of nominally 45 HRC and an identical yield strength of nominally 1340 MPa (194 ksi). Strain-life and stress-life fatigue testing was conducted at room temperature under identical test conditions. The standard array of strain-life and stress-life regression constants was obtained. The two heat treatments produced virtually identical total strain-life curves and fatigue limits at 5 million cycles. However, the two materials exhibited different trends in the elastic and plastic strain regimes. The austempered steel exhibited greater high cycle fatigue (finite) lives than the Q&T samples at comparable elastic strain amplitudes in strain-life fatigue testing and at comparable stress amplitudes in stress-life fatigue testing. However, the Q&T samples exhibited greater low cycle fatigue lives than the austempered samples at comparable plastic strain amplitudes in strain-life testing. Although both materials generally exhibited similar fatigue fracture characteristics, the overload regions of the Q&T samples were composed entirely of dimple rupture, whereas the austempered samples exhibited both dimple rupture and quasicleavage. © 2011 ASM International.
