Using thermal CVD, the synthesis of multi-walled carbon nanotubes exhibiting roots anchored directly onto α-alumina supports, rather than the catalyst particle, is reported. At such roots, the alignment of the graphitic planes with the support lattice fringes depends on the support crystal structure and orientation. Surface defects may alter the reactivity of the surface or control the anchoring of supported atoms or nanoparticles. We argue this surface defect is provided by the catalyst particle's edge interaction with the support, in other words its circumference. The development of oxide-based catalysts is attractive in that they potentially provide an appropriate solution to directly integrate the synthesis of carbon nanotubes and graphene into silicon-based technology. © 2010 American Chemical Society.

A new method to prepare plate-shaped Fe2O3 nanoparticles was investigated and their magnetic properties were characterised. First, Fe2O3 nanoparticles of ~6nm in diameter were synthesised by mechanochemical processing, involving the solid-state exchange reaction Fe2(SO4)3+3 Na2CO3→Fe2(CO3)3+3 Na2SO4→Fe2O3+3 Na2SO4+ 3 CO2 (g) effected by high-energy ball milling and subsequent heat treatment at 400°C. Next, nano-platelets were grown from the nanoparticles by further heat treatment in a salt matrix at 700°C. Removal of the salt and by-product phases after heat treatment led to well-dispersed platy haematite particles of 20-200nm in diameter with aspect ratio of 4-10. The hematite nano-platelets were weakly ferromagnetic with coercivity of ~160Oe and remanent magnetisation of 0.2emu/g. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

The synthesis of mono-dispersed γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles by mechanochemical processing was demonstrated for the first time, via the solid-state exchange reaction Fe2(SO4) 3 + 3Na2CO3 → Fe2(CO 3)3 + 3Na2SO4 → Fe 2O3 + 3Na2SO4 + 3CO2(g) and subsequent heat treatment at 673 K. The nanoparticles had a volume-weighted mean diameter of 6 nm and a narrow size distribution with the standard deviation of 3 nm. The particles showed a superparamagnetic nature with the superparamagnetic blocking temperature of 56.6 K. The anisotropy constant was 6.0 × 106 erg/cm3, two orders of magnitude larger than the magnetocrystalline anisotropy constant of bulk γ-Fe 2O3. The detailed analysis of the magnetic properties indicated that the γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles had a core-shell structure, consisting of a ferrimagnetic core of ∼4 nm in diameter having a collinear spin configuration and a magnetically disordered shell of ∼1.2 nm in thickness. © 2011 Elsevier B.V.

A zinc oxide powder is described, which, when used in a dispersion at a concentration of at least 50 wt % of zinc oxide, produces a transparent composition having a total visible transmittance through a path length of 20 microns at 550 nm of at least one of; at least 70%, at least 75%, at least 80% or at least 85%. The powder has a number average zinc oxide aggregate size of at least 0.8 microns, at least 1 micron, at least 2 microns or at least 3 microns. Use of the zinc oxide powder reduces the risk of transdermal penetration.


A method of manufacturing a zinc oxide powder including synthesizing a mesoporous zinc oxide precursor powder by adding an aqueous solution of zinc chloride to an aqueous solution of sodium carbonate while agitating to cause precipitation of a mesoporous zinc carbonate powder wherein the molar ratio of zinc chloride to sodium carbonate present when the aqueous solution of zinc chloride and the aqueous solution of sodium carbonate are reacted is at least 1:2, heat treating a mesoporous zinc precursor material to form the mesoporous zinc oxide powder at a heat treatment temperature in the range of 250-575 C. The zinc oxide powder includes mesoporous zinc oxide aggregates with a plurality of primary zinc oxide crystallites bonded together at shared interfaces.

A broad-spectrum UV photoprotective composition is described. The composition is characterized in that the composition comprises mesoporous zinc oxide aggregates having an average aggregate size of at least 0.8 microns dispersed in a carrier and the composition is visibly transparent. Sufficient zinc oxide is included in the composition to achieve an SPF greater than 15, greater than 25, greater than 30, or greater than 50.
