Background: Diallyl sulfide (DAS) has been shown to have a preventive effect against various cancers. Aims and objectives: We evaluated the protective effects of DAS in regression of ultraviolet B (UVB)-induced skin tumor formation in SKH-1 hairless mice and its underlying early molecular biomarkers. Methods: We examined the efficacy of DAS in UVB light-induced skin lesion in SKH-1 hairless mice and the associated molecular events. Results: Mice irradiated with UVB at 180mJ/cm2 twice per week elicited 100% tumor incidence at 20 weeks. The topical application of DAS before UVB irradiation caused a delay in tumor appearance, multiplicity, and size. The topical application of DAS before and immediately after a single UVB irradiation (180mJ/cm2) resulted in a significant decrease in UVB-induced thymine dimer-positive cells, expression of proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling, and apoptotic sunburn cells, together with an increase in p53 and p21/Cip1-positive cell population in the epidermis. Simultaneously, DAS also significantly inhibited nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and nitric oxide (NO) levels. Conclusions: The protective effect of DAS against photocarcinogenesis is accompanied by the down-regulation of cell-proliferative controls, involving thymine dimer, PCNA, apoptosis, transcription factors NF-κB, and of inflammatory responses involving COX-2, PGE2, and NO, and up-regulation of p53, p21/Cip1 to prevent DNA damage and facilitate DNA repair. © 2011 John Wiley & Sons A/S. This study deals with the emerging problem of jointly determining the optimal retail price, the replenishment cycle, and the number of shipments for exponentially deteriorating items under conditions of channel coordination, joint replenishment program, and pricing policy. In a one-manufacturer and multi-retailer channel setting, it is assumed that the retailers' demands are price-dependent and can be influenced by time. Two profit-maximization models including the non-integrated policy and the integrated policy were formulated with the aim of maximizing the channel-wide profit. In addition, this study demonstrated the optimal properties of the models, developed a search algorithm to obtain the optimal solutions, and offered structured and quantitative insights into the interplay between the proposed models through a numerical study. © 2009 Springer-Verlag London Limited. Backgrounds: Nummular headache (NH) is currently considered a form of peripheral neuralgia originating from the terminal branch in epicranial tissue but its etiopathogenesis is still unknown. Since autoimmune disorders often involve the trigeminosensory nerve to provoke craniofacial pain, we hypothesize that autoimmunity aberration may play a role with regard to NH. Methods: We examined the antibodies to antinuclear factor, ds-DNA, extracted nuclear antigens, rheumatoid factor, as well as antiphospholipid antibodies, in 23 primary NH patients. Results: Among them were 16 patients (69.6%) found as having at least one abnormal autoimmune index, namely, antibodies to antinuclear factor in 8 patients, SSA/La in 6 patients, rheumatoid factor in 4 patients, SSB/Ro in 2 patients, and ds-DNA in 1 patient. An abnormal increase of blood anti-beta2-glycoprotein I antibody was noted in 4 patients and lupus anticoagulant in 1 patient, whereas HLA-B27 seropositivity was detected in 1 patient. Except for 2 patients positive for antinuclear factor without other associated features, 15 patients (65%) were finally diagnosed as having Sjogren/sicca syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis or antiphospholipid antibody syndrome. Conclusions: A high prevalence of abnormal autoimmune indices and disorders is present in primary NH patients, suggesting a probable relationship between autoimmunity aberration and epicranial neuralgia in NH. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Background: Maize contaminated with mycotoxin fumonisin B1 poses a global threat to agricultural production. In this study, polyclonal antibodies (pAb) specific to fumonisin B1 were generated from rabbits immunised with fumonisin B1-keyhole limpet haemocyanin (KLH). These antibodies were used to establish a sensitive competitive direct enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (cdELISA) and gold nanoparticle immunochromatographic strip for detecting fumonisin B1 levels in maize-based foods and feeds. Results: In cdELISA, fumonisins B1, B2 and B3 at concentrations of 0.42, 0.58 and 81.5 ng mL-1 respectively caused 50% inhibition (IC50) of binding of fumonisin B1-horseradish peroxidase (HRP) to the antibodies. Effective on-site detection of fumonisin B1 was achieved by developing a rapid and sensitive pAb-based gold nanoparticle immunochromatographic strip. This strip had a detection limit of 5 ng mL-1 for fumonisin B1 in maize-based samples. Additionally, the whole analytical process could be completed within 10 min. Close examination of 15 maize-based samples by cdELISA revealed that 11 were fumonisin-positive, with a mean concentration of 435 ± 20.1 ng g-1. These results correlated well with those obtained by immunochromatographic strip.Conclusion: Both cdELISA and immunochromatographic strip methods established in this study are sensitive for rapid detection of fumonisins in agricultural commodities. © 2010 Society of Chemical Industry. Taiwan is famous for its personal computer (PC) products, and this success demonstrates that Taiwanese manufacturers have effective strategies in managing supply chains of PC-related products. Among various strategies of supply chain management, achieving leagility is the main goal. The purpose of this study is to illustrate how a PC original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in Taiwan achieves leagility through reengineering its supply chain. The case study shows how the company adjusts its production processes from build-to-order (BTO) to configuration-to-order (CTO) to achieve leagility.
