Fujifilm North America Corporation recently held a meeting at its Hanover Park, IL, facility, to display its sheetfed inkjet press, the J Press 720. The J Press 720 can handle coated and uncoated stock from 70-lb. text up to 14-pt. board. An anilox coater applies a clear water-based precoat solution. The ink can't penetrate the paper's fibers, resulting in hard, sharp dots said to equal offset quality. The J Press 720 puts down all four colors simultaneously. Gilson Graphics currently has 160 employees and occupies a combined 165,000-sq-ft. pressroon. The operations include three manroland 6-color presses and a Heidelberg SM 52. Digital capabilities include two HP Indigo presses and a Xerox Nuvera and wide-format machines from Mimaki, HP, and Océ. The acquisition of smaller companies has helped Gilson diversify into mailing and fulfillment services, kiting, wide-format printing and online ordering.

The global recession has pushed vendors across the industry toward a service and support approach in mature markets such as the US while they emphasize growth opportunities in emerging markets around the world. Océ currently is a channel for Canon imagePRESS, image-RUNNER Advance and imagePROGRAF products as well as Canon printers connected to Océ's PRISMA modular workflow soft. The imagePRESS C7010VP and C6010VP presses image up to 70 ppm and 60 ppm, respectively, in color and monochrome, regardless of paper weight. For larger, tabloid-sized sheets, the new models enhance hourly output productivity on most media types. The 7010 model replaces the imagePRESS 7000 and is expected to be available for customer delivery this year through Canon Authorized Dealers and Canon Business Solutions.

Denise Kapel offers highlights of the Graph Expo 2010, explaining how digital and mailing vendors occupied floor space once given over almost entirely to offset technology. While overall volumes have been flat or down, HP customers have printed significantly more pages this year. Collective page volumes on the HP Indigo 7000 series grew 90% year-over-year for the first three quarters of 2010 versus the same time period in 2009. Rochester, NY-based Xerox's iGen4 EXP made its debut at Graph Expo 2010. It offers new prepress and finishing capabilities, as well as a larger cut-sheet format. The 14.33 × 26-inch sheet size enables the production of multi-up jobs such as full-size trifold brochures, postcards and greeting cards, or extra large book covers and jackets. Rolling Meadows, IL-based Screen USA unveiled the Truepress Jet520ZZ - the flagship of the Truepress Jet520 series of continuous-feed, single-pass inkjet printing systems.

G7 method, applied by Edison Lithographing & Printing Corp., North Bergen, NJ, in May 2007, enables the company with highest possible quality while not impeding the quick turnaround. The company's quality assurance manager Roger Morel and the Edison Litho team worked with consultant Ron Ellis, guiding them through the implementation steps of G7. The aim of this process was to standardize their control target and focus everyone in-house on the same standard. Edison Litho formalized checklists and procedures to ensure G7 was followed consistently and made necessary changes in its operation to effectuate the G7 implementation. The proofing and platesetting equipment is tested every morning before startup, and recalibrated as required when press or proof conditions are changed. The Edison Litho team considers substrate to be the greatest variable in applying the G7 method and says that creating consistent color across plastic, paper, and board needs to be emphasized.
