In this article the features of vibrations of uncooled polycrystal and single-crystal blades are examined. The analysis of the influence of material type and crystallographic orientation is conducted on the spectrum of natural frequencies, mode shapes and distribution of model stress intensities. Aero-Acoustics is the primary cause of uncomfortable noise in cavity induced flows (Helmholtz resonators) in automotive and aircraft applications. The physics of compressible flows with heat transfer and the mechanism of aero-acoustics is first discussed. On-Line Condition Monitoring and Diagnostics systems are being more commonly employed for expensive and critical rotating machinery to increase their life and decrease their downtime. Though there are several data acquisition systems and digital analysis instrumentation are available, the practice is still to depend on off-line diagnostics systems requiring skilled rotor dynamics knowledge operators to quickly make fault diagnosis. A fully working monitoring and diagnostics tool is not available for easy-to-operate systems. Crash, NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness), and durability analysis are commonly deployed in structural CAE analysis for mechanical design of components especially in the automotive industry. Components manufactured by stamping constitute a major portion of the automotive structure. In CAE analysis they are modeled at a nominal state with uniform thickness and no residual stresses and strains. However, in reality the stamped components have non-uniformly distributed thickness and residual stresses and strains resulting from stamping. It is essential to consider the stamping information in CAE analysis to accurately model the behavior of the sheet metal structures under different loading conditions. Especially with the current emphasis on weight reduction by replacing conventional steels with aluminum and advanced high strength steels it is imperative to avoid over design. Considering this growing need in industry, a highly automated and robust method has been integrated within Altair Hyperworks® to initialize sheet metal components in CAE models with stamping data. This paper demonstrates this new feature and the influence of stamping data for a full car frontal crash analysis. © 2011 American Institute of Physics.

This paper is concerned with an optimal concept design of aircraft wing from an airfoil. The airfoil itself is generated from CFD studies but there is no baseline of the wing structure. Topology optimization is recently applied for weight reduction given an operating baseline structure; here it is demonstrated that this optimization can be used to derive the concept of the wing structure directly. The optimized concept design is realized in to CAD and then a composite free-size optimization is performed to determine material distribution and ply drop regions etc. Finally a composite size and shape optimization is done and the ribs thus realized are presented. Crash analysis is an important step in modern day design of vehicles to satisfy the standards laid down by various agencies. In order to satisfy the standards, the designs should adopt energy absorbing members that are efficient and thus optimization becomes important. Modern design practices now provide procedures for this optimization involving shapes. Because each crash analysis takes considerable computer time, Design of Experiments (DOE) methods are used to generate the response surface on which the optimum is searched using approximate or meta models that consume less computational time. This paper describes methods to achieve shape optimization of the identified members which absorb the energy to a maximum possible value.
