In this paper different stress update algorithms of constitutive models for partially saturated soils are compared on the basis of the Barcelona Basic Model (BBM). They include both explicit and implicit integration schemes applying the Richardson extrapolation method for sub-stepping with error control. The comparison of the mentioned stress update algorithms is performed for prescribed ranges of volumetric and deviatoric strain increments on the basis of two sets of material parameters for the BBM. Finally, some tests of an extensive experimental program are selected for computing the constitutive response of an unsaturated soil and comparing the numerical results with the experimental data. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

The subject of this article based on the Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel is the derivation of a list of criteria for overcoming critical situations during tunnelling at the borderline of open mode to closed mode operation. The consistent application of this list of criteria demonstrates, that with knowledge of the sensitive interaction of machine and surrounding ground, the scope of application of current machine technologies can even be extended into geologically difficult areas. Formerly, this led to considerable problems, at times even economic failure of the project [1] [2] [3]. Recent developments show that special measures like pipe umbrellas are being used more often in continuous tunnelling, and already have to be planned during the design phase. The AT - Casing System, already in successful use for some decades in sequential tunnelling and in geotechnical engineering, has recently seen increasing use in TBM tunnelling. According to the type of pipe used, the system can be used to support the surrounding ground, for grouting measures or for drainage. An example calculation is intended to demonstrate the potential of advance support over a fault zone and point out some possible optimisations of the load-bearing capacity. Finally, the system is presented through the example of the New Kaiser Wilhelm Tunnel in Germany. The 25 km long Pinglu Tunnel is part of a large water supply project in the north west of the Chinese province of Shanxi. After a brief description of the overall project, the article describes the alignment, geology, lining and the TBM and machinery concept. A second-hand hard rock double shield machine built in 1994 was supplied by the employer and had to be overhauled for the reject. The Crossrail project in London, currently the largest infrastructure project in Europe, has shifted the quality control and geo - technical monitoring of SCL tunnelling to the next level. The construction of the second bore of the Bosruck Tunnel is very much influenced by the experience gained in the first bore, which affects the tunnel advance and also support. The west bore has a total length of 5,424 m and is being sequentially tunnelled from both portals at the same time. In addition to the main tunnel, there are eleven crosscuts to be excavated. If it's not safe, don't do it! Accidents at work and lost days cost a lot of money. A calculation of the consequential cost of accidents by the Allgemeine Unfall versicherungsanstalt (AUVA) estimates this at 19,128 Euro per accident in 2010. In the construction industry in Great Britain and the USA, employers and employees generally seem to attach more importance to occupational safety and communicate this more effectively than in Austria andGermany. What are the possible explanations for this difference? This article investigates basic cultural differences in general, in the safety culture and different legal traditions. The factors mentioned are not only de cisive for the usual contract and co - operation models between employer and employee in these countries but also have an effect on the sickness statistics and the cost of accidents. © 2012 Ernst & Sohn Verlag für Architektur und technische Wissenschaften GmbH & Co.
