Allnex has developed Ucecoat 7788, a low-VOC energy curable water-based aliphatic polyurethane dispersion that offers enough performance, robustness and versatility in one single product. This product contains 40% solids with a maximum viscosity of 500mPa at 25°C, a pH ranging between seven and eight and an hydroxyl value of ca 14mg KOH/g. It has a minimum film formation temperature (MFFT) below 0°C and does, therefore, not require the use of co-solvents to help film coalescence. Ucecoat 7788 also provides additional value-in-use by enabling shorter drying times. Unlike most commercial water-based UV-curable resins, this product does not lead to mud cracking and whitening upon forced drying. It offers higher colloidal stability than most commercial UV-curable resin dispersions and improves, therefore, the overall process robustness. Ucecoat 7788 can be blended with aqueous acrylic and PU-acrylic hybrid resins without any reduction in transparency and can even be used with alkyd emulsions to achieve increased wetting of the wood without affecting other proper-ties.
