A new method for water deoxygenation using membrane technologies was suggested. The method is based on electrochemical reduction of dissolved oxygen on the surface of membrane electrode units in combination with its chemical reduction with hydrogen on a catalytically active sorbent. A pilot setup for deoxygenation of high-purity water with the output of up to 200 L h-1 was developed on the basis of the results obtained. © 2015 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

The main analytical characteristics of optical chemical sensors for detecting the vapors and microparticles of explosives and associated substances are compared. The limits of detection, sensitivity, sensor setting time (response speed) and recovery time after the action of an analyte, and the selectivity of fluorescence sensors, chemiluminescence sensors, surface-enhanced Raman sensors, surface plasmon resonance sensors, absorption integrated optical waveguide sensors, waveguide interferometric sensors, and ring resonator based sensors. The effectiveness of the use of nanosized structures and bio- and nanostructured specific coatings in optical sensors is analyzed. © 2014 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

Results from a calculation study on analyzing the formation of a melt bath in a crucible-type catcher for the conditions of a severe accident at a nuclear power station equipped with VVER-1000 reactors are presented. It is shown that the heat loads exerted on the water-cooled walls of the corium catcher shell are limited to a permissible level at which the necessary margins to nucleate boiling crisis and to destruction are ensured under the conditions of thermal and mechanical loading of the shell. An important role of sacrificial material in the efficient operation of the corium catcher is pointed out. © 2011 Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

The need for developing liquid radioactive waste (LRW) reprocessing technologies oriented on autonomous reprocessing at research and production enterprises that are equipped with nuclear reactors and/or use radionuclides in the research and production activity is substantiated. Membrane-sorption technology of LRW reprocessing is suggested as a universal solution. An installation implementing this technology in the modular version, ensuring its low-cost transportation from one facility to another, is described. The developed modular membrane-sorption installation ensures efficient treatment of radioactively contaminated waters with the decontamination factor of 103-104, irrespective of the physicochemical forms of the radionuclides (ionic, colloidal, molecular), with obtaining LRW concentrates for the subsequent cementation. © 2016 Pleiades Publishing, Inc.

Modelling of corium behaviour during a severe accident requires knowledge of the phases present at equilibrium for a given corium composition, temperature and pressure. The thermodynamic database NUCLEA in combination with a Gibbs Energy minimizer is the European reference tool to achieve this goal. This database has been improved thanks to the analysis of bibliographical data and to EU-funded experiments performed within the SARNET network, PLINIUS as well as the ISTC CORPHAD and EVAN projects. To assess the uncertainty range associated with Energy Dispersive X-ray analyses, a round-robin exercise has been launched in which a UO2-containing corium-concrete interaction sample from VULCANO has been analyzed by three European laboratories with satisfactorily small differences. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. The results obtained from testing the secondary-coolant circuit water chemistry of full-scale landbased prototype bench models of vehicular nuclear power installations equipped with water-cooled watermoderated and liquid-metal reactor plants are presented. The influence of copper-containing redox ionexchange resins intended for chemically deoxygenating steam condensate on the working fluid circulation loop’s water chemistry is determined. The influence of redox ion-exchange resins on the water chemistry is evaluated by generalizing an array of data obtained in the course of extended monitoring using the methods relating to physicochemical analysis of the quality of condensate–feedwater path media and the methods relating to metallographic analysis of the state of a faulty steam generator’s tube system surfaces. The deoxygenating effectiveness of the normal state turbine condensate vacuum deaeration system is experimentally determined. The refusal from applying redox ion-exchange resins in the condensate polishing ion-exchange filters is formulated based on the obtained data on the adverse effect of copper-containing redox ionexchange resins on the condensate–feedwater path water chemistry and based on the data testifying a sufficient effect from using the normal state turbine condensate vacuum deaeration system. Data on long-term operation of the prototype bench model of a vehicular nuclear power installation without subjecting the turbine condensate to chemical deoxygenation are presented. © Pleiades Publishing, Inc., 2015.

In the course of water deionization on ion-exchange filters of mixed action, charged with a mixture of KU-2×8 ch.s. cation exchanger and AV-17×8 ch.s. anion exchanger, which are ion-exchange resins of nuclear class, the water being treated is contaminated with soluble organic substances originating from degradation of the resins. Their concentration can reach 20 µg L–1, gradually decreasing to 5–6 µg L–1. Procedures were suggested for determining soluble organic substances washed out from the ion-exchange filters, including gravimetric determination of their sum in aqueous extracts from the organic ion exchangers, spectrophotometric determination in water being purified on the ion exchangers, and preconcentration of electrically charged forms of soluble organic substances by electroosmosis. © 2016, Pleiades Publishing, Ltd.

The resistance of commercial trimethylpentaphenyltrisiloxane to heat and to thermal oxidation was studied. The limits of its use as coolant in systems for removing low-potential heat were determined.
