Soluble guidance cues can direct cellular protrusion and migration by modulating adhesion and cytoskeletal dynamics. Actin filaments (F-actins) polymerize at the leading edge of motile cells and depolymerize proximally [1, 2]; this, together with myosin II activity, induces retrograde flow of F-actins [3-5]. It has been proposed that the traction forces underlying cellular motility may be regulated by the modulation of coupling efficiency between F-actin flow and the extracellular substrate via "clutch" molecules [6-10]. However, how cell signaling controls the coupling efficiency remains unknown. Shootin1 functions as a linker molecule that couples F-actin retrograde flow and the substrate at neuronal growth cones to promote axon outgrowth . Here we show that shootin1 is located at a critical interface, transducing a chemical signal into traction forces for axon outgrowth. We found that a chemoattractant, netrin-1, positively regulates traction forces at axonal growth cones via Pak1-mediated shootin1 phosphorylation. This phosphorylation enhanced the interaction between shootin1 and F-actin retrograde flow, thereby promoting F-actin-substrate coupling, force generation, and concomitant filopodium extension and axon outgrowth. These results suggest that dynamic actin-substrate coupling can transduce chemical signals into mechanical forces to control cellular motility and provide a molecular-level description of how this transduction may occur. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

In this paper, we consider an inverse problem with the k-tridiagonal Toeplitz matrices. A theoretical result is obtained that under certain assumptions the explicit inverse of a k-tridiagonal Toeplitz matrix can be derived immediately. We derive some properties of minimum-error measurements for mixed quantum state signals where a density operator itself has a certain symmetry. In the first case, we show that if there exists a regular normal operator that commutes with each density operator of mixed state signals, then there exists an optimal measurement that consists of detection operators expressed as the direct sum of positive operators with supports in the eigenspaces of the regular normal operator. In the second case, we show that for abelian geometrically uniform state signals, if a matrix which represents one of the signals in a certain basis has all real elements, then the matrix which represents the corresponding detection operator of an optimal measurement in that basis also has all real elements. In addition, we discuss some examples of applications of these properties and derive analytical solutions of optimal measurements for special cases. © 2011 IEEE.

We consider a group covariant quantum state set with a group in which each element corresponds to a unitary or antiunitary operator. This type of quantum state set can express a broad class of quantum state sets, including geometrically uniform state sets and self-symmetric state sets. We derive that for any quantum measurement for a group-covariant state set (both with and without a certain fraction of inconclusive results), a group covariant quantum measurement exists with respect to the same group with the same performance, that is, the same probability of correct detection and the same rate of inconclusive results. We then show that a group covariant optimal measurement exists for any group-covariant state set. In some cases, we derive an optimal measurement for a group-covariant state set. © 2013 American Physical Society.

Label-equivalence-based connected-component labeling algorithms complete labeling in two or more raster scans. In the first scan, each foreground pixel is assigned a provisional label, and label equivalences between provisional labels are recorded. For doing this task, all conventional algorithms use the same mask that consists of four processed neighbor pixels to process every foreground pixel. This paper presents a simple yet efficient first-scan method for label-equivalence-based labeling algorithms. In our method, foreground pixels following a background pixel and those following a foreground pixel are processed in a different way. By use of this idea, the pixel followed by the current foreground pixel can be removed from the mask. In other words, the mask used in our method consists of three processed neighbor pixels. Thus, for processing a foreground pixel, the average number of times for checking the processed neighbor pixels in the first scan is reduced from 2.25 to 1.75. Because the current foreground pixel following a background pixel or a foreground pixel can be known without any additional computing cost, our method is efficient for any image that contains at least one foreground pixel. Experimental results demonstrated that our method is effective for improving the efficiency of label-equivalence-based labeling algorithms. © 2009.

Internet survey may be one of the effective means to collect big data from the real world. Collected data may realize meaningful analysis of targeted field. Intelligent Transportation (hereinafter: ITS) is one of smart city applications which bring us safety driving as well as comfortable driving by mitigation of the traffic congestion. This study proposes an example of vehicle-infrastructure cooperative function which would be incorporate into vehicle safety system for smart city application. Driver's state adaptive driving support safety function may be one of key functions that can bring road traffic safety in combination with road infrastructure interactively. Consequently this study clarified root cause of traffic accidents by analysing data of experiences on traffic incidents. Data was collected by two methods, one was collected through direct interview, and the other was collected through Internet. From the analysis, haste, distraction were major factor of a driver's psychosomatic states just before traffic incidents. As an alternative characteristic of driver's cognitive distraction, this study acquired physiological information, which were movements of eyes and head, and heart rate. A method of detecting driver's cognitive distraction was established by using pattern recognition, which were AdaBoost and Error-Correcting Output Coding (ECOC). This study proposes driver's psychosomatic adaptive driving support safety function in combination with ITS service for smart city applications. © 2015 IEEE.

A stochastic process describes evolutional random phenomena towards future. Corresponding with this direction, there will be a process describing, as it were, backward evolution from future to present. The dual process is a realization of this fact. We restrict our attention to Gaussian processes for which multiple Markov property is well investigated. This property expresses way of dependence of involved randomness as time goes by. We can therefore expect that such a process with multiple Markov property would present an exact form of the dual process. We shall show that having defined generalized Gaussian process with multiple Markov property, we can construct the dual process satisfying the properties that we claim. Traffic fatalities and injuries in Japan have declined for twelve years by the comprehensive counter-measure for the reduction of traffic accidents. The efforts include enhancement of vehicle safety performance in both passive and preventive safety area. With regard to passive safety, major reduction effect was brought by airbag system, seat belt and crashworthiness of vehicle. For further reduction of the traffic accident, preventive safety may play more important role. Recently driver's psychosomatic state adaptive driving support safety system has been highlighted to reduce the traffic accident. For that reason reduction effect of psychosomatic adaptive safety function should be clarified to foster its penetration into the market. Statistical analysis of the traffic incident is highly expected to evaluate the reduction effect of the traffic accident of psychosomatic adaptive safety function. To execute the challenge, this study introduced Internet survey by delivering questionnaires to respondents. From the analysis of the collected answer, major psychosomatic state of driver is hasty and distraction. As a first step this study focused driver's distraction, which may cause severe traffic accidents. By using pattern recognition, the detection accuracy of driver's distraction was acquired. The reduction effect of the driver's distraction in the traffic accident was estimated by referring the reduction rate of both ASV (Advanced Safety Vehicle) and Intelligent Transportation Systems. © 2014 IEEE.

This article deals with the critical history of German and Japanese psychiatrists who dreamed of a 'German world' that would cross borders. It analyses their discourse, not only by looking at their biographical backgrounds, but also by examining them in a wider context linked to German academic predominance and cultural propaganda before World War II. By focusing on Wilhelm Stieda, Wilhelm Weygandt and Kure Shuzo, the article shows that the positive evaluation of Japanese psychiatry by the two Germans encouraged Kure, who was eager to modernize the treatment of and institutions for the mentally ill in Japan. Their statements on Japanese psychiatry reflect their ideological and historical framework, with reference to national/ethnic identity, academic position, and the relationship between Germany and Japan. © The Author(s) 2013.
