In a developmental framework, autonomous robots need to explore the world and learn how to interact with it. Without an a priori model of the system, this opens the challenging problem of having robots master their interface with the world: How to perceive their environment using their sensors, and how to act in it using their motors. The sensorimotor approach of perception claims that a naive agent can learn to master this interface by capturing regularities in the way its actions transform its sensory inputs. In this paper, we apply such an approach to the discovery and mastery of the visual field associated with a visual sensor. A computational model is formalized and applied to a simulated system to illustrate the approach. © 2016 IEEE.

In ambient intelligence environments, the information provided by robot's embedded sensors and physical or logical entities may be inaccurate and uncertain. The Dempster- Shafer evidence Theory (DST) gives a mathematical convenient framework for the evidential fusion representation and inference of uncertain information. However, DST yields counterintuitive results in high conflicting ambient intelligence situations. This paper aims to provide a new strategy to manage conflict in activity recognition process in the ambient intelligence applications. It addresses the challenge of uncertainty and proposes an evidential fusion model based on the management of conflicting situation to optimize decision making in activity recognition. The proposed approach gives intuitive interpretation for combining multiple sources in conflicting situations and avoids the problems of using The Dempster-Shafer rule of combination. Sensor network lifetime strongly depends on the used routing protocol. Using several definitions of lifetime and a common evaluation framework, we have analyzed the lifetime of some representative flat and hierarchical sensor network routing protocols, namely: DIRECT, FLOODING, GOSSIPING, LEACH and HEED. Extensive simulations have been carried out yielding a detailed analysis of lifetimes. Through this study, we propose a new technique to increase HEEDs' lifetime. The resulting protocol EHEED is compared to other protocols. Experimental results show that EHEED can be very effective for long-lived sensor network. © 2011 IEEE.

Artificial perception is traditionally handled by hand-designing task specific algorithms. However, a truly autonomous robot should develop perceptive abilities on its own, by interacting with its environment, and adapting to new situations. The sensorimotor contingencies theory proposes to ground the development of those perceptive abilities in the way the agent can actively transform its sensory inputs. We propose a sensorimotor approach, inspired by this theory, in which the agent explores the world and discovers its properties by capturing the sensorimotor regularities they induce. This work presents an application of this approach to the discovery of a so-called visual field as the set of regularities that a visual sensor imposes on a naive agent's experience. A formalism is proposed to describe how those regularities can be captured in a sensorimotor predictive model. Finally, the approach is evaluated on a simulated system coarsely inspired from the human retina. © 2017 Elsevier B.V.

Data-sharing rule The International Committee of Medical Journal Editors has proposed that it should be mandatory for research-paper authors to share the data underlying their findings. In an editorial published in several prestigious medical journals on 20 January, the group said that authors should share anonymized patient data with other researchers no later than six months after publication (see, for example, D. B. Taichman Ann. Intern. Med.; 2016). The committee also said that a plan for how data will be shared should be part of the clinical-trial registration process. Signatories to the editorial include the editors-in-chief of The New England Journal of Medicine and The Journal of the American Medical Association. DNA search reveals new frog genus DNA analyses have unveiled a new genus of frogs. The group, Frankixalus, hails from northeastern India and includes a taxonomically challenging amphibian, first described in 1876 and named Polypedates jerdonii. The species, now renamed Frankixalus jerdonii (pictured),is joined in the new genus by one other — currently unnamed — species. Classification of these tree-hole dwelling frogs had been confounded by their large snout vents and the high degree of webbing between their toes. But a genetic analysis led by S. D. Biju at the University of Delhi places the frogs in a distinct group (S. D. Biju et al. PLoS ONE 11, e0145727; 2016). Hottest year Last year was the hottest on record, according to data released on 20 January by NASA, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the UK Met Office. All three organizations document unprecedented high temperatures in 2015, pushing the global average to more than 1 °C above pre-industrial levels. A powerful El Niño weather system, marked by warmed waters in the tropical Pacific Ocean, helped to drive atmospheric temperatures well above those for 2014, the previous record high. Some researchers suggest that broader trends in the Pacific could spell even more dramatic temperature increases in years to come. See page 450 for more. Davos debates Health, science and environmental issues were high on the agenda at the World Economic Forum (WEF) meeting in Davos, Switzerland, where international leaders met on 20–23 January. The 2016 meeting — which had as its theme ‘the fourth industrial revolution’ — saw 85 pharmaceutical companies demand new business models to incentivize the development of antibiotics to combat drug-resistant infections. Environmental discussions included a WEF report predicting that the oceans would contain more plastic than fish by weight by 2050, and an updated Environmental Protection Index report from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, which shows an increased degradation of air quality around the world. Turkish protest An international coalition of 20 higher-education organizations has written to the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, urging him to reaffirm Turkey’s commitment to academic freedom and freedom of expression. The 21 January letter, from organizations including the European University Association and the Scholars at Risk Network, voices concern about academics who signed a petition calling on the government to end violent conflict in the country’s predominantly Kurdish southeast. Erdoğan had accused the petition’s signatories of spreading terrorist propaganda, and the letter says that 1,128 academics have since been placed under investigation. Zika virus fears Concern over the mosquito-borne Zika virus outbreak in the Americas is growing. In a statement on 24 January, the Pan American Health Organization warned that Zika is likely to reach all countries in the region where the Aedes mosquitoes that transmit the virus live. The organization, a regional office of the World Health Organization, called for improved mosquito control, and advised people, especially pregnant women, to protect themselves from bites. In a risk assessment on 21 January, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control called for more surveillance of travellers returning from affected countries, so as to rapidly identify potential cases. This followed a 15 January travel warning from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about Zika, which some evidence has linked to babies born in Brazil with unusually small heads and brains. AI pioneer dies Artificial intelligence (AI) expert Marvin Minsky (pictured) died, aged 88, on 24 January. After gaining his PhD at Princeton University in New Jersey, Minsky joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, where he co-founded the AI Laboratory and the MIT Media Lab. He built the world’s first neural-network simulator, invented the confocal microscope and received almost all of the major awards in his field. Berkeley lab head Particle physicist Michael Witherell will become director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory on 1 March. The University of California, which manages the lab on behalf of the US Department of Energy, announced the move on 21 January. Located in Berkeley, California, the lab has an annual budget of nearly US$800 million and is home to research in fields ranging from materials science to genomics. Witherell is currently vice chancellor for research at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and led the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois, from 1999 to 2005. Koch quits Billionaire David Koch has left his long-standing position on the board of trustees of the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, The New York Times reported on 20 January. Koch has given millions of dollars to the museum, which named its dinosaur wing after him. But his presence on the board has been criticized by scientists and activists because the Koch family has also funded climate-change deniers. Koch’s last day on the board was 9 December. Koch remains on the advisory board of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC. Freedom plea More than 360 researchers from around the world have asked Iran to free retired polymer scientist Mohammad Hossein Rafiee-Fanood, in a letter to the country’s president, Hassan Rouhani. Rafiee, who is 71 years old, was imprisoned for “peaceful political activism”, according to Amnesty International, which regards him as a prisoner of conscience. The letter, published on 26 January (see, says that he is kept in inhumane conditions and that the scientist’s imprisonment breaches both the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. Trade theft Federal prosecutors in Pennsylvania have charged five people, including two researchers, with the theft of trade secrets from pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). The researchers were employed at the company’s facility in Upper Merion, Pennsylvania, and allegedly supplied confidential information about GSK’s experimental therapies to a biotechnology company headquartered in China. The trade secrets in question include information about the production of therapeutic antibodies, including one in development to treat cancer. At least 1,312 rhinoceros were illegally killed in Africa in 2015 — a record high for the continent, according to figures released on 21 January by TRAFFIC, a wildlife-trade monitoring network based in Cambridge, UK. South Africa, which has the largest share of this poaching, reported a small decrease — from 1,215 rhinos in 2014 to 1,175 in 2015. Browser-based Single Sign-On (SSO) protocols relieve the user from the burden of dealing with multiple credentials thereby improving the user experience and the security. In this paper we show that extreme care is required for specifying and implementing the prototypical browser-based SSO use case. We show that the main emerging SSO protocols, namely SAML SSO and OpenID, suffer from an authentication flaw that allows a malicious service provider to hijack a client authentication attempt or force the latter to access a resource without its consent or intention. This may have serious consequences, as evidenced by a Cross-Site Scripting attack that we have identified in the SAML-based SSO for Google Apps and in the SSO available in Novell Access Manager v.3.1. For instance, the attack allowed a malicious web server to impersonate a user on any Google application. We also describe solutions that can be used to mitigate and even solve the problem. ©2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

With the expansion of the wireless services, the number of mobile users has rapidly increased and the quantity of information on the internet and in wireless medium has also increased exponentially. This much information becomes difficult to be monitored by users well as searching for specific data may cost a lot in terms of time. Moreover, in the mobile scenario, only simple search and browsing functions are available due to limited computing power of a mobile phone. Therefore, it is more preferable to let the desirable information find the customers rather than to let them search for specific information when it is needed. This can be realized by integrating personalized user preferences along with justification recommendation system such that necessary information find the mobile user and alleviate the burden of search for that information when it is needed. This paper proposes an effective recommender system that can help consumers formulate better purchasing decision by incorporating support for user features. This system is not only recommends items to user based on their interest, but also attempt to recommend the nearest location place of the item. The proposed framework has the potentiality to increase consumer satisfaction, enhance consumer/company loyalty, and boost overall sales by giving justification and creditability to the products that have high degree of interest to consumers. The results show a significant promise in the system's ability to make accurate recommendations to the users. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Dynamic incentive mechanisms can provide simplification, robustness, and optimality in dynamic, multiagent environments, by engineering the right rules of encounter. Mechanism design theory typically insists on designs that enjoy the special property of incentive compatibility, namely, it should be in every agent's own best interest to be truthful in reporting its type. Allocation mechanism is incentive compatible in the strong sense that truthful bidding is dominant strategy equilibrium. A typical goal is to characterize the family of incentive-compatible mechanisms for a problem, in order to identify the mechanism that is optimized for a particular design criterion, perhaps social welfare, revenue, or some notion of fairness. Success has been found in generalizing the canonical Vickrey-Clarke-Groves (VCG) mechanism to dynamic environments, and in enabling the coupling of heuristic approaches to stochastic optimization with incentive compatibility in restricted domains.

Artificial object perception usually relies on a priori defined models and feature extraction algorithms. We study how the concept of object can be grounded in the sensorimotor experience of a naive agent. Without any knowledge about itself or the world it is immersed in, the agent explores its sensorimotor space and identifies objects as consistent networks of sensorimotor transitions, independent from their context. A fundamental drive for prediction is assumed to explain the emergence of such networks from a developmental standpoint. An algorithm is proposed and tested to illustrate the approach. © 2015 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a method for automatically detecting the times during which game players exhibit specific behavior, such as when players commonly show excitement, concentration, immersion, and surprise. The proposed method detects such outlying behavior based on the game players characteristics. These characteristics are captured non-invasively in a general game environment. In this paper, cameras were used to analyze observed data such as facial expressions and player movements. Moreover, multimodal data from the game players (i.e., data regarding adjustments to the volume and the use of the keyboard and mouse) was used to analyze high-dimensional game-player data. A support vector machine was used to efficiently detect outlying behaviors. We verified the effectiveness of the proposed method using games from several genres. The recall rate of the outlying behavior pre-identified by industry experts was approximately 70%. The proposed method can also be used for feedback analysis of various interactive content provided in PC environments.
