The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of different cryodevices (Open Pulled Straw (OPS), Electron Microscopy Grid(EMG) and cryotop for vitrification of immature bovine oocytes. Polar body, Mil stage, survivability and subsequent developmental rates were compared. Only oocytes with 4-5 layers of cumulus cells were used. Oocytes were equilibrated in the first vitrification solution (VS1; HS+10% DMSO+10% Ethylene Glycol (EG)) for 30-45 sec and then in the second vitrification solution (VS2; 20% DMSO+20% EG+0.5 M Sucrose) for 25 sec. Within 30 sec they were mounted on one of the cryodevices and directly plunged into Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) for 10 days. Immature oocytes vitrified using cryotop represented higher rate of polar body extrusion and nuclear maturity (p<0.05). The highest survivability resulted from cryotop andEMG groups and no significant difference found between them. Vitrified oocytes in cryotop group had highest cleavage and blastocyst rates. All of the mean measured rates for vitrified/warmed immature oocytes were significantly lower than that of control group (p<0.05). In conclusion, results of this study showed the superiority of cryotop device for vitrification of immature bovine oocytes which resulted in higher viability and subsequent embryo development. © Medwell Journals, 2011. Seagrass is a valuable marine ecosystem engineer. However, seagrass population is declining worldwide. The lack of seagrass research in Malaysia raises questions about the status of seagrasses in the country. The seagrasses in Lawas, which is part of the coral-mangrove-seagrass complex, have never been studied in detail. In this study, we examine whether monthly changes of seagrass population in Lawas occurred. Data on estimates of seagrass percentage cover and water physicochemical parameters (pH, turbidity, salinity, temperature, and dissolved oxygen) were measured at 84 sampling stations established within the study area from June 2009 to May 2010. Meteorological data such as total rainfall, air temperature, and Southern Oscillation Index were also investigated. Our results showed that (i) the monthly changes of seagrass percentage cover are significant, (ii) the changes correlated significantly with turbidity measurements, and (iii) weather changes affected the seagrass populations. Our study indicates seagrass percentage increased during the El-Nino period. These results suggest that natural disturbances such as weather changes affect seagrass populations. Evaluation of land usage and measurements of other water physicochemical parameters (such as heavy metal, pesticides, and nutrients) should be considered to assess the health of seagrass ecosystem at the study area. © 2013 E. Antioxidant properties of rice bran oil from different rice bran varieties; Rice Bran-Bario (RB-Bario), Rice bran-Lowland (RB-Low) and Rice Bran- Upland rice (RB-Up), collected from different cultural plots, were assessed. Measurement of antioxidant properties was evaluated by TPC (total phenolic content), DPPH scavenging activities and reducing power of extracts.. The study shows that antioxidant efficacy of rice bran was found the highest in RB-Up, followed by RB- Low and RB-Bario. The antioxidant properties were related to the rice bran origin and water irrigation demand by particular variety. RB –Up has a unique plantation condition which takes least amount of water retention which contribute to the highest antioxidant activity. Extraction solvents used shows that Upland (16.15%) and Lowland (16.16%) yielded the highest amount in conserving the crude fat oil in rice bran extract compared to Bario. © 2016 Penerbit UTM Press.
