In Austria and other EU-countries each year foodborne diseases are reported. It can be assumed, according to the outcome of outbreak-statistics and international studies that hygiene recommendations in domestic households are observed insufficiently. This study was designed as a combination of methods of quantitative and qualitative research approaches. On one hand the actual behavior in food handling should be observed in real conditions to see possible causes of food-borne illness. On the other hand a representative questionnaire should provide information about knowledge and awareness of food safety. The results indicate deficits and low levels of microbiological knowledge in the population. Source
