This paper presents a novel skeleton pruning approach based on a 2D empirical mode like decomposition (EMD-like). The EMD algorithm can decompose any nonlinear and non-stationary data into a number of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). When the object contour is decomposed by empirical mode like decomposition (EMD-like), the IMFs of the object provide a workspace with very good properties for obtaining the object's skeleton. The theoretical properties and the performed experiments demonstrate that the obtained skeletons match to hand-labeled skeletons provided by human subjects. Even in the presence of significant noise and shape variations, cuts and tears, the resulted skeletons have the same topology as the original skeletons. In particular, the proposed approach produces no spurious branches as many existing skeleton pruning methods and moreover, does not displace the skeleton points, which are all centers of maximal disks. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

This paper presents a novel physics-based dual deformable model to detect objects in an image. This model is more efficient than the known methods since it can detect objects whose boundaries are not necessarily defined by gradient. It minimizes an energy which can be seen as a particular case of a minimal partition problem. This energy is used as the model motivation power evolving the deformable model, which will stop on the desired object boundary. However, the stopping term does not depend on the gradient of the image, as most of the classical active and deformable contour models, but instead is related to the image color and spatial segments. Modal analysis is exploited to solve the deformation equation. Furthermore, the segmentation result produced depends on the physical characteristics of the model. Different physical characeristics lead to different segmentation results. The introduced deformable dual model composes of three interconnected deformable models. In most cases, one model expands from inside to the desired image features, the other contracts from outside, and finally, the deformation of the intermediate model is controlled by the two others, via modal analysis, to the desired image features. The whole model interconnection idea provides a balanced technique with a strong ability to reject \weak local minima improving the performance of the segmen- tation against other known methods. The theoretical properties and various experiments presented demonstrate that the proposed dual deformable model is better and more robust than other known methods. © 2012 ISSN 2073-4212.

This paper presents a novel unsupervised image clustering approach based on the image histogram, which is processed by the empirical mode decomposition (EMD). The proposed algorithm exploits an intermediate step derived from the empirical mode decomposition, which can decompose any nonlinear and non-stationary data into a number of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs). The IMFs of the image histogram have interesting characteristics and provide a novel workspace that is utilized in order to automatically detect the different clusters into the image under examination. The proposed method was applied to several real and synthetic images and the obtained results show good image clustering robustness. © 2012 ISSN 2073-4212.

Consumption of milk and dairy products is one of the best, and most available, sources of nutrition in the world. Unfortunately, one of the most common sources of foodborne illness is contaminated milk. This is especially true in third world countries where sanitation practices are primitive and refrigeration on-farm or during transport to milk processing plants is very unreliable due to instability of available electrical power. Thus, a system that would allow milk to be pasteurized and chilled on farm or at local community collection points prior to transport would have a tremendous impact on dairy product quality and food safety and would support the USDA SBIR initiative of lowering the risk of foodborne illness and securing a major source of the global food supply. Based on the existence of commercially available solar powered water pasteurizers and new developments in food grade sensors, we believe that development of a portable, low cost, automated pasteurizer for enhancing food safety in global communities is an achievable goal. It is anticipated that a portable, low cost device may be manufactured that effectively pasteurizes and chills milk for several days prior to delivery to the processing plant. It is anticipated that the proposed device may be configured to automatically clean itself using a control unit that can be managed remotely. It is also anticipated that device sensors can reliably transmit process data to a remote location such that the device may be monitored and controlled remotely. Successful development of such a system will have dramatic impact on food safety of agricultural products in remote locations with limited technology.
