We theoretically investigate the nonequilibrium work-relation of Jarzynski which is designed to provide equilibrium information on mesoscopic thermodynamic systems that have undergone an irreversible transformation. We find that its validity is restricted to the situation where the control forces responsible for the irreversible work operate effectively as uncoupled to the otherwise autonomous system dynamics. We also discuss the subtleties involved in the extended work-energy theorem and in formulating the work average as a nonequilibrium ensemble average in the phase space. © 2013 The Korean Physical Society.
