Biosynthesis of magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO) was achieved by a novel, simple green chemistry procedure using Nephelium lappaceum L peel extract as a precipitant and capping agent. Biosynthesis of MgO nanoparticles was carried out via hydroxide precipitation at room temperature followed by calcination at 450 °C. The successful formation of magnesium oxide nanoparticles has been confirmed by XRD, SEM and PSA analysis. The prepared MgO nanoparticles were coated on the cotton fabric. Coated cotton fabric with the MgO nanoparticles were analyzed by SEM and EDX analysis and their antibacterial effect was evaluated by Agar Diffusion test method. MgO nanoparticles coated cotton show good antibacterial activity towards E. coli (Gram negative bacteria) and S. aureus (Gram positive bacteria) in laboratory condition. A green, low cost and environment friendly aqueous extract of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis [Parijataka] flower is employed for the synthesis of tin oxide nanoparticles using the starting material stannous chloride dihydrate (SnCl 2 · 2H 2O). The particles were characterized by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Particle Size Analyser (PSA) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) studies. XRD pattern of tetragonal phase SnO 2 nanoparticles matches well with the Joint Committee on Powder Diffraction Standards (JCPDS) data. The average size of the nanoparticles derived from Scherrer's equation coincides with the size of 2-8 nm arrived from PSA. SEM images of SnO 2 nanoparticles exhibit the morphology of very fine granules with the tiny agglomerated stage. FTIR implicates the role of nyctanthes in the synthetic process and indicated the position of tin oxide nanoparticles. The present study explores the hydrolysis and capping potentials of aqueous extract of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis flower for the synthesis of tin oxide nanoparticles. In this report β-cyclodextrin has been grafted onto cotton fabric and the magnesium ions were loaded onto the resulted grafted fabric to impart antibacterial activity. Both the prepared β-cyclodextrin grafted fabric and magnesium ions loaded grafted fabric were characterized by scanning electron microscope and Fourier transform infrared techniques. The antibacterial character of magnesium ions loaded fabric was tested by agar diffusion test against E. coli and S. aureus. The results show that Gram positive (S. aureus) bacteria shows better antibacterial character than Gram negative bacteria (E. coli). Source
