A method of controlling power in a network element includes powering the network element by receiving power from a power communication medium and providing a telecommunication service over a service communication medium. The method further includes monitoring a primitive related to the powering of the network element and controlling the powering of the network element based on the primitive. More particularly, in an embodiment, the method comprises: powering the network element (404) by receiving power from a first power communication medium (406) at a first power interface (450); providing telecommunication service to the network element (404) via a first service interface (452) coupled to the first power communication medium (406); receiving at a second power interface (480) of the network element (404) power from the first power interface (450); applying power to a second power communication medium (416) from the second power interface (480), over which power from the network element (404) is supplied to a second network element (414); providing telecommunication service to the second network element (414) via a second service interface (453) coupled to the second power communication medium (416);exchanging management information with a source network element (402) coupled to the first power communication medium (406); and control powering of the network element (404) at least based on a primitive related to the power of the network element (404). Described are computer server apparatus of a type which are cooled by installation into a cooled enclosure in a data center, the cooled enclosure of a type characterized by having a plurality of channels which are configured to cool installed apparatus by contacting a thermally conductive surface on a rail of the installed apparatus. Disclosed are chassis and arrangements of thermal components which provide short thermal paths between heat generating components and the cooled enclosure. Also described is a slide assembly which enables computer system apparatus to be easily installed and removed from a cooled enclosure. The slide assembly configured to be installed on a rail portion of the computer system and comprises a retractable support in the form of a retractable wheel which is configured to support the computer chassis during installation into the cooled enclosure.


Disclosed is an enclosure wall assembly of a type which can be used to cool electronic equipment, the electronic equipment characterized by having a rail comprising a thermally conductive surface which is cooled by its installation into a cooled enclosure. The described enclosure wall comprises channels whose cooled surfaces can be cooled by coolant flowing through a coolant guide in thermal contact with each surface. Configurations of coolant guides with fins or pins are described as are coolant guides which enable mission critical cooling via redundant cooling flows. Also disclosed is a method and apparatus for controlling the temperature of coolant supplied to cooled enclosure apparatus in a data center environment. The described coolant delivery system comprising inner and outer pipework separated by a mixing valve, the mixing valve being operable to allow coolant from the outer portion to mix with coolant from the inner portion.

A flat drop cable has notches or other structures for enhancing the stripability of the jacket from the a core of the flat drop cable. The notches can have an angled configuration with surfaces that converge as the notch extends into the jacket. Inner edges of the notches can be positioned along a tear path that intersects the core of the flat drop cable. For example, the notches can be offset from a minor axis of the flat drop cable a sufficient distance such that the notches are positioned outside a central boundary region that extends tangent to sides of the core and parallel to the minor axis of the flat drop cable.
