Disclosed are methods for monitoring and measuring Optical Signal-To-Noise Ratios in optical communications systems. One exemplary method involves intentionally inserting zero power symbols into an optical signal stream such that those periods of time in which only zero power symbols are transmitted may be detected and compared with periods of time in which signals modulated with information including both signal and noise are detected such that the OSNR may be determined.


Disclosed are structures and methods for CMOS drivers that drive silicon optical push-pull Mach-Zehnder modulators (MZMs) with twice the drive voltage per interferometer arm as with prior art designs.

A photonic integrated circuit may be coupled to an optical fiber and packaged. The optical fiber may be supported by a fiber holder during a solder reflow process performed to mount the packaged photonic integrated circuit to a circuit board or other substrate. The optical fiber may be decoupled from the fiber holder, and the fiber holder removed, after completion of the solder reflow process.
