In order to obtain directions of arrival (DOA) of two wide-band sources effectively, with a small size four-element planar cross array, the beam-space coherent signal-subspace method (BSCSM) applied to the orientation of wide-band sources was studied, and its performance was analyzed. Measured helicopter noise was used to simulate output of array elements as wide-band sources, which contains the certain directions of target arrival. The BSCSM and CSM (coherent signal-subspace method) were employed respectively to estimate sources' DOAs. The performance of BSCSM was compared with CSM using computer simulation. The simulation results show that BSCSM provides a better performance than CSM in the passive acoustic direction estimate for two far-field wide-band sources with small size four-element planar cross array. © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media New York.

The acoustic signal of a very low-flying armed helicopter is mainly characterized with a low-frequency and wide-band signal. In this chapter, the beamspace coherent signal-subspace method (BSCSM) is studied with a small size four-element planar cross array. This array is applied to the orientation of two wideband sources, and its performance is analyzed. The BSCSM, incoherent signal-subspace method (ICSM), and coherent signal-subspace method (CSM) are employed to estimate sources’ directions of arrival (DOAs). Simulation results show that BSCSM shows best performance among the three algorithms, and the CSM shows performance which is better than the ICSM does in the acoustic passive direction estimate of two wide-band sources in the far-field environment with a small size four-element planar cross array. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.
