Background: Scleritis may be the initial or only presenting feature of systemic, autoimmune, or infectious disorders. Corticosteroids are the mainstay of treatment for immune-mediated scleritis. However, steroids could prove detrimental when used to treat infectious scleritis. Hence, infectious causes of scleritis should be ruled out. Findings: A 47-year-old male from central India presented with swelling, pain, and redness in the left eye since 2 months. The patient was diagnosed elsewhere as having an extraocular extension of intraocular tumor and advised radiation brachytherapy for the same. Clinical examination revealed nodular scleritis in the left eye. The patient did not have any systemic illness or complaints suggestive of connective tissue disease. Laboratory investigations ruled out the same. However, Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) test was positive. Rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test and Treponema pallidum hemagglutination assay (TPHA) were also positive, confirming the diagnosis of syphilis. Ultrabiomicroscopy (UBM) and ultrasound scan of the eye ruled out intraocular tumor. Treatment was initiated with benzathine penicillin 2.4 million units per week for 3 weeks to which the patient responded remarkably well. Conclusions: Although rare, syphilis can present as nodular scleritis masquerading as ocular tumor. Syphilis must be considered in the list of etiological diagnoses in patients presenting with nodular scleritis, and testing for this disease should be a part of routine investigation in patients with scleritis. © 2015, Shaikh et al.; licensee Springer.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A fast growing consumer preference toward last-minute entertainment decisions has propelled Gametime to a banner year. Underscoring the emerging trend, 75% of tickets sold on the mobile app in 2016 occurred within seven days of the event. Year-over-year revenue growth exceeded 220 percent as the company expanded aggressively, catering to fans looking to live more spontaneously. As part of the expansion, Gametime has just launched over 1500 theater events in select markets, including San Francisco, New York, Boston, Chicago and Los Angeles. Gametime users now see a “Theater” tab displaying the popular upcoming musicals or plays in their city. Events such as the Nutcracker continue to be holiday favorites and the obsession for Hamilton has hit the West Coast as it prepares to open in San Francisco and Los Angeles in 2017. The Gametime Theater offering will expand to other markets throughout the U.S. and Canada in 2017. “We are extremely pleased with the progress we’ve made in 2016, but it’s just the beginning as we continue our mission to enable the easiest access to live events at the last minute,” said Gametime founder and CEO Brad Griffith. 2016 also showed impressive user growth with nearly two million fans downloading the app. Those last-minute fans in particular favored the continuously optimized mobile experience for on-demand and instant access to live events. Millennials, who make up nearly 80% of Gametime’s customer base, were particularly active on the app throughout the year. Baseball fans like Mark Hochberg, 27, found amazing last-minute deals, often after the start of the event, underscoring the promise of instant mobile access and inventory availability. Hochberg, a Chicago Cubs fan, used Gametime to purchase the very last ticket to Game 7 of the World Series, fifteen minutes after the game had started at roughly 50% off the average price of the day. Gametime established new company performance records throughout the year, most notably in Q4, when five of its top 10 grossing events in company history took place. In fact, over an eight day span in October, the company scored its second through sixth best selling events ever, a combination of S.F. Giants and L.A. Dodgers postseason games. Some unique events helped drive the significant growth during the year including the 2016 Copa America Centenario - Quarterfinals in June, which became the company’s single highest grossing sports event ever and continues to hold that position. After introducing Music in December of 2015, the company added thousands of concerts across its various markets. While seeing significant sales around the hot tours like Kanye West, Drake and Beyonce, it was the SuperCity Summer Fest that ranked as Gametime’s single highest grossing music event in 2016. So high, that it qualified as the fourth highest grossing tour of the year. Headlined by DJ sensation Skrillex, the EDM stadium show is the only music event to rank in the company’s top 25 all-time grossing events. Gametime expanded its service footprint to 60 markets during the year bringing states like Alabama, South Carolina and Nebraska onto the platform, all home to some of the country’s largest college football fan bases. In total, Gametime launched over 5000 events in 2016, more than ten times the number of events in 2015. Gametime continued to drive product innovation, introducing key features like its Snap & Sell and Connect. Snap & Sell enables fans to quickly take photos of any tickets they have and upload immediately to the Gametime marketplace. Connect introduced a prospective social network marketplace for fans to see what events their friends may be attending, where they are seated, and potentially join them by purchasing the nearest available seats. In June, the company began to define its brand of last-minute living by releasing its first video campaign, “It’s Gametime!”. The video, chronicling two friends’ crazy adventure getting to a game, was viewed over 4 million times on Facebook and liked nearly 7,000 times. The Gametime College Road Trip served as another branding vehicle, literally, as Jameson and Mitch Ritter traversed the country in a Gametime-wrapped Winnebago attempting to establish a world record for most college football games attended in a single season. Currently at 49 games and counting, the Ritters have covered over 26,000 miles since Sept 1. The brothers have served as ambassadors throughout the journey, spreading the word on Gametime to fans and media. The tandem expect to attend ten bowl games including the National Championship in Tampa. A $20 million Series B round of funding led by Evolution Media Partners and GV was announced in September, underscoring the confidence investors have in Gametime’s promise for the future. The new round brought total funding to date to $33 million, positioning Gametime well for its short road to profitability. Gametime is the leading mobile marketplace for last-minute tickets to live events. The Gametime app connects fans with more than 1,500 teams and artists, letting them make the most of the moment - together. With Gametime, you can buy and sell tickets to sports games, concerts, theater performances, and more, in less than 10 seconds - even after the event has started. Gametime curates tickets with the best value, presents them with in-seat panoramic views, offers an ultra-fast, two-tap check-out and delivers tickets directly to your phone (eliminating the need for a printer!). Gametime was founded in 2012 with the vision to create a more vibrant and connected world. Gametime is currently available in 60 cities in the US and Canada. PURPOSE: To study the corneal endothelial cell density and morphological features in type 2 diabetic patients (cases) and compare it with nondiabetic subjects (controls) in a population-based cross-sectional study. METHODS: Patients were recruited from the Sankara Nethralaya-Diabetic Retinopathy Epidemiology and Molecular Genetic Study, a population-based study to estimate the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and diabetic retinopathy in urban Chennai, South India. Corneal endothelial morphological features were recorded in all subjects using noncontact specular microscopy and central corneal thickness was measured using ultrasound pachymeter. RESULTS: A total of 1191 cases and 121 controls were enrolled into the study. The mean corneal endothelial cell density (cells/mm) was lower in cases than in controls (2550 ± 326 vs. 2634 ± 256; P = 0.001). No difference was observed in the mean pachymetry values, hexagonality %, and coefficient of variation of cell size between cases and controls. Multivariate regression analysis, after adjusting for age, showed the mean cell density to be lesser by 66 cells/mm (95% confidence interval, 6.3-125.9) among diabetic patients compared with nondiabetic subjects. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study, from a large population-based sample, support the earlier theories of lower endothelial cell counts among subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus in comparison with nondiabetic controls. © 2012 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

Eye (Basingstoke) | Year: 2013

PurposeTo measure the choroidal thickness and ocular perfusion pressure in eyes with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), wet-age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and age-matched normal subjects, and look for a possible association between the two.MethodsThis was a prospective study including 22 eyes with PCV, 33 eyes with wet-AMD, and 35 age-matched normal eyes. Choroidal thickness was measured using enhanced depth imaging (EDI) with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD OCT). Mean ocular perfusion pressure (MOPP) was calculated using the mathematical formula 2/3[DBP+1/3 SBP × DBP]-IOP (DBP - diastolic blood pressure, SBP - systolic blood pressure, IOP - intraocular pressure). Analyses were carried out using SPSS 14 software and comparisons of mean made using't' tests.ResultsEyes with PCV showed increased (285.9 μm; subfoveal) choroidal thickness, whereas eyes with wet-AMD (119.4 μm; subfoveal) showed reduced choroidal thickness in comparison with normal eyes (186.77 μm; subfoveal). MOPP in the PCV group was 57.85 mm Hg (P value 0.00), in the wet-AMD group was 52.1 mm Hg (P-value 0.12), and in the normal group was 49.79 mm Hg.ConclusionIt is postulated that higher MOPP in eyes with PCV could have an etiologic implication in disease manifestation and progression. Larger studies with longer follow-up may help validate these findings. © 2013 Macmillan Publishers Limited All rights reserved.

Purpose: To determine the systemic associations in retinal arterial occlusions (RAO) in young Indian individuals less than 40 years of age. Materials and Methods: Case records of 32 patients (35 eyes) of less than 40 years, with non-traumatic RAO were analysed. All patients underwent detailed ophthalmic and systemic evaluation including hemogram, lipid profile, coagulation profile, vasculitis screening, carotid Doppler, echocardiogram. Results: In the study 21 were males and 11 were females. The age ranged from 11-39 years (Mean 27.6 8.43). Nine (28%) patients were below 20 years of age. Among 35 eyes, 28 (80%) had central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), three (8.6%) had branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO), two (5.7%) each had cilio-retinal (CLAO) and hemi-retinal artery occlusion (HRAO). Vision ranged from no perception of light to 20/20. On systemic evaluation, in 21 (65.6%) patients a hypercoagulable state was responsible for the RAO. Conditions leading to a hypercoagulable state included hyperhomocysteinemia (21.9%), hyperlipidemia (15.6%), anticardiolipin antibody (6.2%), antiphospholipid antibody (6.2%), polycythemia, thrombocytosis, protein S deficiency, use of oral contraceptives and renal disorder (3.1% each). Six (18.7%) patients had cardiac valvular defects. Vasculitis screening was positive in three (9.4%) patients. Two (6.2%) had isolated systemic hypertension. In two (6.2%) patients no abnormality could be detected. Conclusion: The systemic associations of RAOs in the Indian population were distinctly different from those reported in the Western population. Hyperhomocysteinemia was the commonest association found. Whereas associations reported in the Western population such as cardiac abnormalities, coagulation disorders, hemoglobinopathies and oral contraceptive use were uncommon.

The equilibrium selectivity and operational capacity of two commercial (Lewatit MonoPlus TP 207 XL and TP 220) and four novel monosized macroporous ion exchange resins are characterized as a function of pH and chloride concentration in conditions relevant to nickel and cobalt recovery from laterite leach solution. The four novel functionalizations were mixtures of acetic acid, picolyl, and sulfonic acid. Resin with the acetic acid functionalization displayed higher operational capacity and lower selectivity for nickel and cobalt over other metals than those with picolyl functionalization. The presence of potassium chloride generally had either a negligible or positive effect on metal loading in the context of nickel laterite processing by decreasing loading of unwanted metals such as iron, aluminum, calcium and magnesium. Significant potassium loading was seen on resins involving the sulfonic acid group. In picolyl based resins the presence of chloride increased cobalt loading by a small amount. The magnitude of these effects varied significantly between resins. Of the novel resins, the functionalization combining acetic acid and picolyl seems the most promising as it displays a higher capacity than the bis-picolylamine resin and better selectivity for nickel and cobalt over other metals than the iminodiacetic acid resin. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. A case report is a description of a single case with unique features. This includes a previously-unreported clinical condition, previously-unreported observation of a recognised disease, unique use of imaging or diagnostic test to reveal a disease, previously-unreported treatment in a recognised disease, or previously-unreported complication of a procedure. Case reports should be short and focused, with a limited number of figures and references. The structure of a case report usually comprises a short unstructured (or no) abstract, brief (or no) introduction, succinct but comprehensive report of the case, and to-the-point discussion.

Because of their varied spectrum of clinical presentation and difficulty in management, pediatric uveitis remains a challenge to the ophthalmologist. Variations in clinical presentation, difficulties in eye examination, extended burden of the inflammation over quality of life, limited treatment modalities, risk of amblyopia are the main challenges in the management of pediatric uveitis. Pediatric uveitis is a cause of significant ocular morbidity and severe vision loss is found in 25-33% of such cases. This article summarizes the common causes of uveitis in children with special approach to the evaluation and diagnosis of each clinical entity. Copyright: © 2013 Khandekar RB.
