In this article, the discontinuities of the theory of heat conduction model with memory-dependent derivatives are emphasized. To analyse the discontinuities, the memory-dependent model is applied to a transient thermo-mechanical process. The fundamental equations of the problem are expressed in the form of a vector matrix differential equation. Applying modal decomposition technique the vector matrix differential equation is solved by an eigenvalue approach in the Laplace transform domain. In order to obtain the solution in the physical domain an approximate method by using asymptotic expansion is applied for short time domain and to analyse the nature of the waves and discontinuity of the solutions. Finally, a suitable Lyapunov function, which will be an important tool to study several qualitative properties, is proposed. © 2017 Springer-Verlag Wien

Some of these infectious uveitic entities are familiar, while others are newly emerging in the global ophthalmic world. Many of these entities are also a major cause of morbidity and mortality, and appropriate, timely management is required to save not the eye, but life of the patient. PURPOSE: To study the corneal endothelial cell density and morphological features in type 2 diabetic patients (cases) and compare it with nondiabetic subjects (controls) in a population-based cross-sectional study. METHODS: Patients were recruited from the Sankara Nethralaya-Diabetic Retinopathy Epidemiology and Molecular Genetic Study, a population-based study to estimate the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and diabetic retinopathy in urban Chennai, South India. Corneal endothelial morphological features were recorded in all subjects using noncontact specular microscopy and central corneal thickness was measured using ultrasound pachymeter. RESULTS: A total of 1191 cases and 121 controls were enrolled into the study. The mean corneal endothelial cell density (cells/mm) was lower in cases than in controls (2550 ± 326 vs. 2634 ± 256; P = 0.001). No difference was observed in the mean pachymetry values, hexagonality %, and coefficient of variation of cell size between cases and controls. Multivariate regression analysis, after adjusting for age, showed the mean cell density to be lesser by 66 cells/mm (95% confidence interval, 6.3-125.9) among diabetic patients compared with nondiabetic subjects. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study, from a large population-based sample, support the earlier theories of lower endothelial cell counts among subjects with type 2 diabetes mellitus in comparison with nondiabetic controls. © 2012 by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.

PurposeTo measure the choroidal thickness and ocular perfusion pressure in eyes with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV), wet-age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and age-matched normal subjects, and look for a possible association between the two.MethodsThis was a prospective study including 22 eyes with PCV, 33 eyes with wet-AMD, and 35 age-matched normal eyes. Choroidal thickness was measured using enhanced depth imaging (EDI) with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD OCT). Mean ocular perfusion pressure (MOPP) was calculated using the mathematical formula 2/3[DBP+1/3 SBP × DBP]-IOP (DBP - diastolic blood pressure, SBP - systolic blood pressure, IOP - intraocular pressure). Analyses were carried out using SPSS 14 software and comparisons of mean made using't' tests.ResultsEyes with PCV showed increased (285.9 μm; subfoveal) choroidal thickness, whereas eyes with wet-AMD (119.4 μm; subfoveal) showed reduced choroidal thickness in comparison with normal eyes (186.77 μm; subfoveal). MOPP in the PCV group was 57.85 mm Hg (P value 0.00), in the wet-AMD group was 52.1 mm Hg (P-value 0.12), and in the normal group was 49.79 mm Hg.ConclusionIt is postulated that higher MOPP in eyes with PCV could have an etiologic implication in disease manifestation and progression. Purpose: To determine the systemic associations in retinal arterial occlusions (RAO) in young Indian individuals less than 40 years of age. Materials and Methods: Case records of 32 patients (35 eyes) of less than 40 years, with non-traumatic RAO were analysed. All patients underwent detailed ophthalmic and systemic evaluation including hemogram, lipid profile, coagulation profile, vasculitis screening, carotid Doppler, echocardiogram. Results: In the study 21 were males and 11 were females. The age ranged from 11-39 years (Mean 27.6 8.43). Nine (28%) patients were below 20 years of age. Among 35 eyes, 28 (80%) had central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), three (8.6%) had branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO), two (5.7%) each had cilio-retinal (CLAO) and hemi-retinal artery occlusion (HRAO). Vision ranged from no perception of light to 20/20. On systemic evaluation, in 21 (65.6%) patients a hypercoagulable state was responsible for the RAO. Conditions leading to a hypercoagulable state included hyperhomocysteinemia (21.9%), hyperlipidemia (15.6%), anticardiolipin antibody (6.2%), antiphospholipid antibody (6.2%), polycythemia, thrombocytosis, protein S deficiency, use of oral contraceptives and renal disorder (3.1% each). Six (18.7%) patients had cardiac valvular defects. Vasculitis screening was positive in three (9.4%) patients. Two (6.2%) had isolated systemic hypertension. In two (6.2%) patients no abnormality could be detected. Conclusion: The systemic associations of RAOs in the Indian population were distinctly different from those reported in the Western population. Hyperhomocysteinemia was the commonest association found. Whereas associations reported in the Western population such as cardiac abnormalities, coagulation disorders, hemoglobinopathies and oral contraceptive use were uncommon.

The equilibrium selectivity and operational capacity of two commercial (Lewatit MonoPlus TP 207 XL and TP 220) and four novel monosized macroporous ion exchange resins are characterized as a function of pH and chloride concentration in conditions relevant to nickel and cobalt recovery from laterite leach solution. The four novel functionalizations were mixtures of acetic acid, picolyl, and sulfonic acid. Resin with the acetic acid functionalization displayed higher operational capacity and lower selectivity for nickel and cobalt over other metals than those with picolyl functionalization. The presence of potassium chloride generally had either a negligible or positive effect on metal loading in the context of nickel laterite processing by decreasing loading of unwanted metals such as iron, aluminum, calcium and magnesium. Significant potassium loading was seen on resins involving the sulfonic acid group. In picolyl based resins the presence of chloride increased cobalt loading by a small amount. The magnitude of these effects varied significantly between resins. Of the novel resins, the functionalization combining acetic acid and picolyl seems the most promising as it displays a higher capacity than the bis-picolylamine resin and better selectivity for nickel and cobalt over other metals than the iminodiacetic acid resin. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Because of their varied spectrum of clinical presentation and difficulty in management, pediatric uveitis remains a challenge to the ophthalmologist. Variations in clinical presentation, difficulties in eye examination, extended burden of the inflammation over quality of life, limited treatment modalities, risk of amblyopia are the main challenges in the management of pediatric uveitis. Pediatric uveitis is a cause of significant ocular morbidity and severe vision loss is found in 25-33% of such cases.
