Differential evolution (DE) is one of the latest evolutionary optimization methods proposed by Storn and Price . It is a new heuristic approach mainly having the following advantages: finding the true global minimum regardless of the initial parameter values, fast convergence, and using few control parameters. DE algorithm is based on a population like genetic algorithms and it is using similar operators: crossover, mutation and selection. In this work, some basic aspects regarding DE are introduced and an application regarding parameters estimation is presented. From the simulation results, it was observed that the DE algorithm seems to be a promising approach for engineering optimization problems.

This paper presents the results obtained using an instantaneous frequency estimation method, based upon the detection of the peaks of the spectrogram and the scalogram. A comparison is made between these two representations, showing the advantages and the disadvantages of both. Some instantaneous frequency estimation examples are presented, using as test signals nonstationary frequency modulated signals covered with zero mean gaussian noise.
